WINS TOBACCO STAKES Alleghan Under Connollys Good Ride Captures Feature. ♦ Unpropitious Weather Again Prevails — Jockey E. Pool in the Limelight. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 30.— The Tobacco Stakes, carrying a net value of ,020 to the winner was an outstanding feature of the Kentucky Associations racing this afternoon and it resulted in a victory for J. T. Looneys Alleghan, cleverly ridden by the veteran D. Connolly. Following him came Sandy Man carrying the colors of Hal Price Headley, with Captain Seth in third place. Considerable racing luck entered into Alleghans victory and Connolly figured also extensively in his success. The victims were Captain Seth and Ren-barg. The former suffered as a result of Pronks persistence in taking him back and Renbarg was pulled up when he began faultily and then bolted across the track to the inner rail. Pool pulled him up. The active Edith Bennett took command soon after the start and Sandy Man and Smacker were her earliest followers, but she gave way to Sandy Man when the field rounded into the stretch. Sandy Man then appeared the victor but Alleghan responding in game style to the hard riding of Connolly overhauled the leader steadily and won by a short half length. Captain Seth. after racing all over the track, came fast in the last eighth and outstayed Helens Babe for third place. Helens Babe was coupled with Sandy Man. Renbarg was the favored one in the race. TRACK AT ITS WORST. Bleak weather was again the order and the most trying track that has prevailed at the meeting. The attendance, however, was of goodly proportions in spite of the adverse conditions and the racing was spirited and spectacular. Most of the finishes were hard fought, and while choices won in most instances some of their victories were of the fluky variety and due to the poor riding that the contenders received. The sixth race, which brought to the post some Kentucky Derby eligibles, furnished the pronounced upset of the afternoon when Step Along, backed to the exclusion of the others, failed dismally and finished in third place, being beaten handily by Broadway Jones and Old Slip. Broadway Jones was coupled with Boones Knoll, but the latter disliked the going and was done after a half mile. Step Along had to overcome some interference in the early stages, but he moved into contention with a rush when straightened in the back stretch. He raced into defeat Fire On, the early leader, with ease, and, entering the stretch, he seemed to have the race at his mercy, but he began quitting badly in th last eighth and Broadway Jones had little difficulty in heading him in the last sixteenth. Old Slip, which had been far back durng the early part, continued fast during the stretch, and he also passed Step Along in the last seventy yards. BRADLEYS MAIX RELIANCE. The race did not show up any of the starters as formidable contenders in the big Churchill Downs fixture. Still, it is possible that some will improve and furnish a surprise. It was Broadway Jones first start this year and he performed to the expectations of his owner, E. R Bradley. He is regarded as the mainstay of the Idle Hour eligibles to duplicate Behave Yourselfs Derby success. Jockey E. lool inaugurated his success for the afternoon astride Happy Top, a pronounced favorite, the shortest priced one of the meeting. His victory here was an easy one and he came away in the stretch to win cantering over Saar, which under hard riding outstayed Jollly Boy in second place. Sarah Day, a stable companion to Jolly Boy, ridden by E. Neal, who was unseated after the start and refrained from further riding during the afternoon on account of a slight Injury. Pools next success came in the second race. Here he was lucky to score with Lucent, for Kyrock which finished in second place was much the best. His failure was the result of Taylor taking him back sharply at the first turn which cost him considerable ground. He then rode wide but the colt came on gamely near the end and forced Lucent to his best stride to win out Mieux, the early leader, was best of the others. Another favorite was lucky to get home in advance when Eight Sixty won in the third race from Ma.ximanch. The latter might have won but for the mistake of her rider when he brought her into close quarters during the stretch run and had to take her up sharply to avoid interference. Eight Sixty won in a hard drive by a short neck.
