Whitney. ♦ BALTIMORE, Md., May 11.— The Jennings Handicap at three-quarters of a mile, with an added value of ,000 to the winner, had its decision here today. It was won by the iveiglades Stables Wise Counsellor, carrying Albert Johnson and 124 pounds, the top weight of the field of five that contested for the stake. Shuffle Along, from the stable of A. C. Bostwick, the New York sportsman, was second a half length in front of his stablemate. Scorcher. H. P. Whitneys Candy Kid was fourth. He was a keen factor in the running until the last sixteenth, where he fell back tired. Senator Norris, the remaining starter, was never a serious contender. Wise Counsellor won easily. After indulging Shuffle Along with the lead in the run through the back stretch, Johnson sent him into the lead rounding the upper turn and then took a snug hold of him. Straightened in the stretch he drew away easily and won by four lengths in front of Shuffle Along. The victory of Wise Counsellor marked Johnsons second successive success of the afternoon. In the opening race he was astride the Glen Kiddle Farm Stables Friars Carse. The Jockey Club Handicap, which divided interest with the afternoons feature, furnished a rattling good contest with Fast Mail the winner by a head from Bigheart. The two raced like a team the entire way, first one in front, then the other. When the final test came in the stretch run Fast Mail, a bit the fittest of the two, outlasted Big-I heart. It was the latters first start of the year and under the circumstances it is natural to suppose that he might not have been tightened up just as much as was Fast Mail, which had the benefit of a couple of races. Scotch Broom was third, another head away. This one, a follower in the early-stages, slipped through next to the inside rail entering the homestretch and closed with a great burst of speed at the end. The H. P. Whitney stable scored in the sixth race when The Bat beat his rivals off by a long margin. Parke hustled The Bat along in the early stages to get to Brown Betty, but when straightened out in the Continued on ninth pajre. Six j lengths back of The Bat came Gun Boat, which wore down the tiring Brown Betty in the stretch to beat her by a length and a half for second place. A wild tip developed on the Glen Riddle Farm Stables Friar Rook filly Friars Carse, a first-time starter, which was one of the two-year-old maiden fillies that went to the j post in the first race. There was steady backing for the filly and at post time she was an even money favorite. Johnson had the mount and Friar"s Carse never left the result in doubt after the start. She got off with the leaders and before they went a dozen strides she began drawing away and the further they went the bigger the gap she opened, until she led Shampoo by five lengths at the finish. The latter was the runner-up all the way and was an easy second. Friars Carse is a grand looking filly and acted like an old horse at the barrier. She stood perfectly still, but when the barrier was sprung she settled right down to running. Light showers fell before the field went to the post, but it did not affect the going as the winner ran the four and a half furlongs in :34V5. a good race over the Iimlico course. The winner is a half-sister to Knergy. The Widener stable lost a tough race when Lorenzo was beaten in the Emerson Steeplechase, for which he was a well-backed choice. Fredden Rock was the winner by a half length. In the early stages Lorenzo raced under restraint and. going to the eleventh fence, moved up with a rush to assume an easy lead. At the last jump the Widener horse bolted to the outside and lost a couple of lengths, while Kennedy saved every inch of ground possible with Fredden Rock. Lorenzos mishap enabled Fredden Rock to take the lead again and at the end he was staggering off Lorenzo, which came again. Two horses went down at the last fence. Stock-mar and Rosy Jester. Irish Jig all but fell over Stockmar. He jumped right on top of him and went down behind, but Crawford managed to keep him together and he scrambled to his feet again and finished. This horse looked very fit going to the post, jumped well and could have been closer up. Harry Baker was best in the third race, a dash of a mile and seventy yards for maidens. He was ridden by Howard, who came over from New York to pilot the black son of Sunstar. A bit fractious at the post Harry Baker began in the middle of the bunch, but rounding the first turn went up on the outside with a rush. Entering the back stretch he shook off Marconi and, after assuming an easy lead, was taken in hand and held command of the situation the remainder of the trip. He beat Marconi out a length. Barnes made a desperate attempt with Marconi entering the home stretch, but the winner held him safe and, try as he might, Marconi was unable to improve his position the landat eighth of a mile.
