Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of May 20. 1905 Racing at Belmont Park, Churchill Downs, Toronto. Kansas City, Union Park and Fair Grounds at St. Louis. There was an increased attendance today at Belmont Park to see the running of the National Stallion Stake.-, the Ladies Stakes and the International Ste-plechase. The rich two year old fixture was conceded to First Water, but he succeeded in v. mnmg only after a tremendous effort from the remarkably improved Clark Griffith. Luck favored both the win ners of the Ladies and the Crosscountry affair, or the result might have been different. The Chelsea Stables Flinders, bay filly by Hastings 1 idena, was given a great ride by I.yne and it appeared at the finish as if the latter caught Frankie ONeill napping on Gold Ten and beat him to the finish by a head. Gold Ten was reserved in the early running, but made a brilliant stretch run and had a com fortuble bad an eighth from home, but in the last strides Flinders dropped her nose in front. .1. W. Colts Arian won the International Stee-pechase. but Flying Buttress was probably best, swerwng all over the course near the I finish, but was only three quarters of a length behind the winner. There was a rumor at the track today that Hermis had broken down. Agile, the winner of the Tenn?ssee and Kentucky Derbys and Phoenix Hotel Stakes, was one of the eight yearlings Capt. S. S. Brown purchased privately of Col. E. F. Clay in the spring of 1903 for 5,000. Agile has won to date as a two and three y-ar old 9,652. or ,652 more than he and his sven companions co.-t Captain Brown as yearlings. It is likely that this will be the last meeting held at Woodbine with its present surroundings. It is the intention of the Ontario Jockey Club to build new stands, resoil the track, construct a new ring and make other modern improvement* during the summer.
