Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of May 22, 1905 Racing at Belmont Park, Churchal Downs, Toronto, Kansas City, Fair Grounds and Union Park at St. Louis. Jockey Buchanan has for the fourth time during the E.m Ridge meeting at Kansas City been suspended by starter Holtman. His offense today was breaking through the barrier with Quickstride in the opening race. This suspension is for the remainder of the meeting and precludes his riding for the Tichenor Stable as well as others. The terms of Messrs. August Belmont, John Sanford and E. B. Morgan as members of the State Racing Commission of New York expired May 9. Governor Higgins has not yet filled the places. Mr. Belmont is a Democrat and Governor Higgins is being urged by members of his party to appoint a Republican as chairman. James R. Keene, Clarence Mackay, E. R. Thomas and Congressman James W. Wadsworth have been mentioned for the position. The speculative public for the first time at Belmont Park today left exultant and hopeful over the success of four favorites and two heavily backed second choices. Rosebens brilliant victory at seven furlongs under the crushing impost of 140 pounds, the decisive manner in which Oxford disposed of his opponents and qualified handsomely for tomorrows Jockey Club weight-forage race, were the features of the afternoons sport. Roseben defeated Nep-tuanus and six others in the opening race and carried his 140 pounds with consummate ease, finishing a length and a half before Neptuanus, coming from behind in the stretch to beat the latter out. He was the favorite. Oxford was pressed harder at the end than was Roseben, being only half a length before Cairngorn.
