TANGARA IN FRONT • — Furnishes Surprise in Winning Feature Race at the Downs. • Pindar Peels Third Straight Win — Blue Stone Makes It Four Out of Five for Meeting. — i LOUISVILLE. Ky., May 27.— S. N. Hol-mans Tangara again figured in a winning performance and furnished a surprise in the feature race, which he won handily from Buck and Laveen with several other highly i i rated ones following. The race was at cne I j mile and a field of ten including the Idle ! Hour pair. Buck and Fancy Me, composed ! the starters. j The entire band raced closely bunched for j j three-quarters and as a result of this several i ! met with interference. Buck was one of | the sufferers and he fell back in the first i ; half mile. There was a changing of positions in the last quarter, the early pacemakers retiring and the laggards moving forward. Tangara. which had been on the extreme outside for most of the way, found a clear j , course the quickest when the stretch was ; i reached and moved away from the others with Buck working his way through and going after him fast. Tangara, however, ; held on gamely and won well in hand. Buck outstayed Laveen for second lace. I.*aveen | j was ridden by P. Connelly today, and instead of being kept completely out of it, as In her previous start, when ridden by Mocney, she was well up with the leaders today and fought it out hard in the stretch. I Improved weather, of the ideal brand. | brought another big attendance to Churchill : Downs this afternoon and they witnessed ; some excellent sport, the smaller fields being I a contributing factor. I W. iAKSERS FIRST SUCCESS. P. Coynes Pindar Peel scored his third | ! ! success quickly when he beat home good , sprinters that made the contest in the sec- ] ondary attraction. He was ridden by W. j j Garner and it was that youngsters initial victory of his career. He rode Pindar Peel in masterly style and he had little difficulty [ • outstaying High Prince, with Ten Eyok in1 , third place. Dominique, Certain and Elsass early leaders In the race, retired swiftly during the stretch racing. The sixth race furnished the outstanding upset of the afternoon when Indianapolis was beaten handily by Belle, carrying G. F. i Croissants colors. Indianapolis was backed | | to the exclusion of the others anu she raced j in the early part as if she would make a j runaway of it, but she began tiring during the stretch and it enabled Belle, which had been saved from the fast pace in the early | | stages, to come away steadily in the last ! j eighth. Cameo finished in third place. The ; i latter was bumped considerably when Smith i rushed Belle between Indianapolis and j I Cameo. Blue Stone continued in his winning ways ; and triumphed in the closing dash, the fourth race he has won during the meeting. There was considerable doubt of V. Moares ability to handle him properly and this accounted for the lack of support he had. He was in last place, far out cf it for half a ! mile, but he came with a rush through the stretch, to wear down Bean King, which had j displaced Coyne out of the lead. Coyne j showed his usual high order of speed far , three-quarters and was lucky to outstay The Competitor for third place. LOUD tBUItl ALL THE WAT. Some highly rated sprinters met In the third race with Lord Granite the favored one. Connelly gave him a splendid ride and with the colt running kindly and gamely he had little difficulty keeping in front for most of the way to win by a length and a half from the suddenly improved Lathrop. The latter raced in his best style and came with a good rush through the stretch. Lawless after following the winner closest began tiring in the stretch but was good enough to outstay the fast finishing Parole II. Malvina B. proved best of the maiden fillies that engaged in the second race. She had an outfer position and her early speed carried her into a good lead before the first turn was reached. The usual jam came here and Malvina B. managed to increase her advantage. She was well in hand during the stretch with Helens Babe driving hard for second place. Cupids Curse was lucky to land in third place. Another stride would have found Wildwood landing the shorter portion of tbe purse. The opener furnished a surprise by the victory of Fusilecr. Mortensens sup.-rior riding landed him the victor over Homing Bird and Parader. The latter might have been the best. He was ridden wide and weakly whereas Fusil. -.-r saved much ground during the last quarter under energetic handling. Homing Bird had a rough journey but she finished fast and. by virtue of saving ground during the last eighth, managed to get up in the last stride for s. . .,nd place. I.*w Pope, heavily backed, came out of the race badly lamed and Al Stebler, another favored one, was never seriously t— I— t.
