FINIS AT WOODBINE i Wilderness Captures $,10,000 Toronto Cup, Feature. 1 Woodbine Steeplechase to Dunks Green — Royal Visitor Easily in Hendrie Memorial. ♦ TORONTO, Ont., May 30. — One of the most successful spring meetings ever held at old Woodbine came to an end with the thirty-fourth running of the Toronto Cup as the big attraction of a wonderful closing day program. Wilderness, with J. D. Mooney in the saddle and coupled with Senalado, was the winner from General Thatcher, twice winner at the meeting, which displaced Joy Smoke for second money in the last sixteenth. Horologe and Wilkes-Barre were last-minute scratches, but it left a field of seven to contest for the 0,000 added, every one having a chance. Just prior to the race, rain began to fall gently, but It did nothing more than lay the dust. Leopardess, sent on from New York especially for the one race, with W. Harvey up. was first to show in front with Wilderness close by and the rest of the field well bunched. Joy Smoke quickly moved into contention and was second going down the back stretch. General Thatcher was closer to the pace than usual, but was badly shut off when Joy Smoke and Wilderness moved up on the back stretch. He kept to the rail and was shut off again at the three-eighths post. Meantime Leopardess tired and Joy Smoke hooked up for the run down the stretch. General Thatcher worked to the outside and took the overland route down the stretch to overhaul Joy Smoke, but could not catch Wilderness. General Thatcher had all the breaks against him and might have furnished a real battle for Wilderness had he not twice been pocketed. ATTENDANCE OF 17,000. With rain threatening, the attendance at Woodbine today was considerably affected, but even at that there were seventeen thousand on hand for the final days racing of the Ontario Jockey Clubs spring mooting. For quality and value the days offerings could hardly be surpassed by any Jockey Club in Canada and few elsewhere. With the Toronto Cup, with its 0,000 added, the Woodbine Steeplechase ,500 added and the William Hendrie Memorial ,000 added and no other race worth less than ,200, it appealed to the t est horses in training. Even despite the withdrawal of the Seagram trio in the Toronto Cup, owing to the death of Mrs. J. K. Seagram, it left a big field of high class horses. Harry iiddings won his first race of the Canadian season when his aged Royal Visitor was an easy winner in the William Hendrie Memorial with its ,000 added, at one mile, loading home Chloris and Procyon by a wide margin. At the first turn Jean Crest and James F. OHara both ran to the outside fence and the White filly crashed clean through the outer rail, but Jamrs F. OHara got back in the running. He brought up the rear of the field. Going down the back stretch Royal Visitor quickly went to the front and none got close to him for the remainder of the journey. Forecast II. was well up in the early stages with Chloris in close pursuit, followed by Prince of Power. In the stretch run Chloris maintained her position while Forecast II. and Prince of Power gave way and Procyon came from well back to overcome Fairbank in the run down the stretch. STEEPLECHASE ATTRACTION. Walter J. Salmons Dunks Green, racing under restraint until the last turn of the field, was the winner of the thirty-ninth running of the Woodbine Steepleoha.se. with the early pacemaker, Lieutenant Seas, second and Guingamp, which had been remounted at the last jump, third. Lieutenant Seas and Ipsal were allowed to go to the front the first turn and a half of the field, then Guingamp moved up to ho followed by Dunks Green. Ipsal replaced Lieutenant Seas in the lead, but tossed Fen-BMsf at the first stretch Jump in the run home when slightly in front of Dunks Qreea. Making a bad landing at the last Jump, Guingamp stumbled and fell.
