Mr. Cooper, was well represented however, he having Missionary and Corinth running In his in-! terests. They tried valiantly, but could not ! get to the flying leader and had to be con-i tent with second and third places, while Topango was fourth, a length and a half In front of Pall Gee the only other starter. Corinth was caught in the webbing at the start, but soon rushed into contention and always held the others safe for second place, j while Missionary had no opposition for third after the first quarter mile. Ladies day brought out a large crowd of the fair sex and the weather was made pleasant by a strong wind which blew across the course. The track was in slow condition, having been deadened by the recent heavy rain and fast time was impossible. After the second race a fire broke out at the far end of the paddock and for a moment looked serious as it was being fanned by the wind, but the quirk action of horsemen and trainers who formed a volunteer bucket brigade prevented serious damage. FOItM UPHEAVAL I ~ OPENER. The days program opened with a form upheaval when Lady Allen, which was backed with rare confidence by the public, was soundly beaten, she finishing third to Outlawed and Lavigne. The latter was away slowly, but rushed around his rivals and assumed command before they hnd gone an eighth and opened up a good gap, but tired in the stretch and could not stall off Outlawed, which finished ; fast and won going away. It appeared, mid- j way of the stretch, as If Lady Allen was going to drop completely out of the money, but she managed to out game the tiring Black Angel. Nine sprinters contested the result in the second race and the result was another surprise, Teslie Stables Duty Hoy annexing the major portion of the purse after a driving finish from P.oys Believe Me, with Fin-day, the public choice, third, a length in advance of Clnughjordan. The winner came to the inside entering the stretch and, catching Boys Believe Me, held the latter safe to the end. Tharon broke down badly after going three-eighths, while Col. Taylor and Lady Finnell were soundly beaten and were pulled up. Numerous scratches reduced the field in the third to seven starters, but a fine contest was provided. Phyllis Gentry was the winner, finishing a half length in front of whirlwind, which in turn beat Dr. McArthur by a neck. The winner, although carrying five pounds more than her carded weight, finished with fine courage to win, while Whirlwind, which had acted very badly at the barrier and was away slowly, closed a big gap to get up In time to take second money from I r. McArthur. the early pacemaker. Boyal George raced with the leaders for a short distance, but tired. EASY FOR CHAPLET. Chaplet was winner of the fourth race, over the mile and seventy yard route. G »n. Cadorna finished second, with Ossaleen third. The victorious daughter of Ralph began quickly and showed the way for over a half mile, when she relinquished the lead to ien. Cadorna. w.iich opened a three- ] length advantage turning for home. Ossaleen was also running strongly at this time and saved murh ground by cutting the corner at the stretch head, but Chaplet was not to be denied, .and she came again when the others began tiring and had a three-length advantage at the finish. Ossaleen tired racing in the worst g"i ng and Gon. Cadorna had little difficulty b ating her for second place. J. W. Brackmans Royal Charlie raced in front all the way to win the sixth race with ease from the six long-distance performers opposed to him.
