June 17.— Mud racing was I the order at Latonia this afternoon, the • heavy rains converting the going and it was 1 also responsible for the declaring off of one of the original contests on account of withdrawals from the race. A three-quarter dash j , was substituted for the original and it found L , I eleven acceptances. Cloudy weather accompanied by intermit- ■ | tent showers caused a noticeable decrease in I ■ j the attendance. The racing offering was | i fairly good, considering the unpropituous con-i ditlons with a three-quarter handicap the ■ stellar attraction. It brought to the post ■ five good ones Including Arcady, winner In his two preceding starts, which included the I Quickstep Stakes when he beat the best here. • ; Arcady was given the call but at the finish ■ he was among the unplaced. The early part found Arcady the leader with Quince Garden and Kitty Pat his nearest pursuers. Modest and Bradleys Toney were far back, a considerable distance away from the others. The laggards began closing on the leaders at the stretch turn. Burke elected to take Modest wide. Hum brought Bradleys Toney next the inner rail. Both made their runs simultaneously and came like wind. Bradleys Tony suffered some when Charles allowed Arcady to swerve and it checked him momentarily. Modest, with a clear course, came strong and twenty yards from the finish was about to pass out the tiring Quince Garden when Burke suddenly desisted riding hard and the brief pause » u used Quince Harden to get his second wind and he beat home Modest by a matter of inches. Bradleys Toney came again near the end and was right in back of the pair. Arcady tired badly and Kitty Pat was done before the last sixteenth was reached.
