. . 1 I ; , ! I J 1 r LIBERAL LIST OF ENTRIES Fine Array of Nominations for Belmont Park and Saratoga Steeplechase Stake Events. NFYV YORK. .V. Y.. April 10. A splendid season of cross country sport is foreshadowed by the liberal entries that have been received for the Steeplechase Stakes that will be decided at Relmont Iark and Saratoga Springs this year. Racing secretary Sohaum-burg is proud of the fact that the nominations for the fixtures at both points are in excess of those received for last year. The figures for Belmont Park are 328 for this season and ,°.11 in-1925. For Saratoga Springs the totals are 25* for 1926. in comparison with 230 last year. The increase in patronage confirms thf conviction that cross country sport is gaining in popularity. Interest in steeplechasing has been growing for several years. The presence of so many Americans at the recent running of the Riverpool Jrand National has been widely commented on abroad. The fact that Jack Horner won the National in the colors of the American sport: man Charles Schwartz is certain to be helpful in promoting cross country sport in the Inited States. There is now a sentiment that somebody on this side of the water should try for the blue riband of the cross country world with a horse that has been developed at home. That they can be bred here is indicated in the victory of the Cal-ifornian Rubio some years ago. RICH .IIMPIX; FIXTURES. Perhaps there will be a "National" horse among the eligibles for the Appleton Memo-" rial, the 0,000 classic of the spring meeting at P.elmont Iark. the IJrook Handicap Stefqdechase. of a corresponding value to be raced in the autumn, or among the eligibles for the S.l.OOO Saratoga Steeplechase Handicap, to be decided at the Spa in August. Colonel Alger names one of his best Irish chasers in Maureen Bawn. The veterans Dan IV. and Not Much are among the eligibles. and if they stand training will surely go to the post. Rorkes Drift is a six-year-old gelding by imported Assagai, owned by F. Ambrose Clark, whose country home is at Cooperstown. Mr. Clark has long been an ardent patron of steeplechasing. and has ridden his own horses to victory at The Spa. in the days when he thought nothing of risking his neck in competiuon with the best of the professionals. He and the old gelding Jim Megibben were pretty hard to beat. The comparative list of the entries for Westchester and Saratoga follows: Westchester Racing Association. 191.". l»2fi liarlev !,.
