CAPTAIN HAL EASILY Shows Sparkling Performance to Win Downs Feature Large Number of Derby Visitors VisitorsRemain Remain Over for Mondays MondaysGood Good Program LOUISVILLE Ky May 17 The Louis ¬ ville Hotel Handicap was the outstanding attraction at Churchill Downs today and it was witnessed by another large crowd many of whom had remained over after the Derby running runningThe The race was at one mile and a sixteenth and had six starters with Captain Hal a pronounced favorite and an easy winner He raced as if he outclassed the others and displayed a sparkling effort Trainer ISoscoe Goose has him at present in superb form and he is probably the best in the handicap division in these parts at the present time Captain Hal was under restraint for the en ¬ tire mile and a sixteenth and defeated Laveen and Moonraker The winner and Moonraker were both worked an additional threesixteenths after the finish as a pre ¬ liminary for their start in the Grainger Memorial Handicap next Saturday SaturdayGranite Granite Ware favorite racing for Mose Lowenstein was the winner of the opening race and showed the way to the nine other starters winning by a short length from Massey with Waponoca in third place The winner had to be urged hard in the final quarter and tired but held Massey safe Waponoca held on gamely Rose Mist and Antiquarian expected to figure extensively failed badly badlyPRECEDENCE PRECEDENCE LOSES RIDER RIDERThe The second race attracted fifteen starters at seveneighths but only fourteen finished Precedence having lost his rider Loyal Le ¬ gion owned by Polk Laffoon and trained by Roscoe Goose was winner here He drew away in the stretch and was well in hand at the finish Kajaba an extreme out ¬ sider finished in second place and Amir an ¬ other outsider took third place Queen Navarre and Vivandiere were disappoint ¬ ments here hereLady Lady Von showed suddenly improved form when she led home a band of good platers starting in the third race She was favored by her light impost and after assum ing the lead in the first quarter held sway thereafter to win with much in reserve Black Grackle also racing to her best form ran well and held on gamely during the stretch to land in second place Third place fell to Yorick which raced prominently all the way but was fast giving way to Ramkin near the end Ramkin as usual was far back and did not make up his mind to race at his best pace until almost reaching the stretch stretchComrade Comrade beat a good band of twoyearolds that started in the fourth race He came away during the last eighth after Irene Rohan and Sport Trail had exhausted them ¬ selves in pace making Khalifa which had started slowly also finished gamely and sav ¬ ing much ground overhauled Sport Trail in second place The latter would have been a handy second but for being ridden wide during the stretch and it enabled Khalifa to down him in the closing strides Irene Rohan also contributed in Sport Trails de ¬ feat by racing with him at a fast pace during the early stages stagesSHIPPED SHIPPED BACK EAST EASTAll All the Eastern horses except Light Car ¬ bine were shipped back East All the train ¬ ers as well as owners of the defeated East ¬ ern horses graciously acknowledged that they had met a superior horse and were loud in their praises of the contest contestIt It was the general opinion that there never has been a Derby running more free of interference than Saturdays Those that could displayed their best ability an dthe lag ¬ gards simply did not measure up to the lead1 ers The East barely escaped being shut out of the major purse Had Rhinock not been hampered by Display at the start he might have landed in third place Of course Pompeys showing was disap ¬ pointing to Easterners There is just the possibility that he is not the stayer that some of his ardent admirers think he is isThe The sixth race in which eight twoyearold fillies performed resulted in an upset when Caroline Carter ridden by M Skyrm was returned the winner She beat out Old J ice after a sharp drive in which Skyrm dis played good riding ability The youngster seems to have the makings of a firstclass jockey and has sliown ability on several occasions Old Lace vvas an outsider and she might have won but for being taken back soon after the start and raced wide thereafter Pompano outstayed Gay Hallie one of the stoutly backed ones onesWhile While it was a big crowd that witnessed todays racing it was mighty small by com parison with the horde of people that was at the Downs Saturday Threatening weather finally culminated into showers after the sixth race The beat was oppressive until the moisture cartui The truck did not suffer and the racing vas spirited and spectacular
