Here and There on the Turf Reviewing the Derby Special With Carlaris Preakness and Derby Changes in Form The Kentucky Derby of 1926 is one running of the famous old race that will long remain one of its memorable renewals It was a race that was singularly free from interference and the character of the victory pronounced Bubbling Over one of the most remarkable of the winners in the long history of the Derby It was a race in which no excuse could be offered for Pompey the generally accepted twoyearold champion of last year and at all times in the running of the race he held a position that permitted him to whip Bubbling Over had he been horse enough Fator made no mistakes in his riding of the son of Sun Briar and Cleopatra He had him under re ¬ straint back of Bubbling Over through the early running He seemed to call on the Coe colt at the proper time but Pompey had met his master and when the son of North Star HI quickened his rate of speed he was more than a match for the son of Sun Briar BriarMr Mr Coes colt appeared to be thoroughly fitted for the Derby and it would seem from his showing that at the best he is a good miler but not the equal of Bubbling Over even at that distance distanceIt It was natural that chief interest in the Kentucky Derby should center in these two colts before the running on Saturday but it was demonstrated that Pompey will find several colts capable of beating him over the mile and quarter route Unless it should be dis ¬ covered that he had some excuse that was not made apparent in his racing The only excuses that are possible are either that he was not ready for such a race or that some ¬ thing went wrong with him in its running As a matter of fact his utter defeat was so surprising by many that it was asked whether or not he had broken down And now that the question of supremacy be ¬ tween Bubbling Over and Pompey seems to be settled it is suggested that the Bradley champion should have an opportunity to meet W T Andersons Carlaris the imported colt that raced so sensationally at Tijuana It was too bad that Carlaris was denied his chance to start in the Kentucky Derby by reason of the injury he received shortly after his winning the Coffroth Handicap but this injury has been diagnosed as in no sense truly serious or per ¬ manent It was just a troublesome infection that kept the colt from training and the re ¬ cent operation promises to restore him to per ¬ fect soundness soundnessNow Now it would seem that a wonderfully good race could come out of a sjxecial between these two colts It is remembered that last year Mr Bradley expressed a willingness to have Bubbling Over meet Pompey for any ¬ thing from a tin cup to any sort of a side ntake ntakeUnfortunately Unfortunately that race was never arranged but there will be a wonderful chance provided Carlaris Is brought back to his Tijuana form to have a bpecial arranged arrangedIt It would prove a wonderful attraction for IJncoln Melds in Chicago and douhticsH Colonel Winn would be willing to hang up a sub 1 Ktanttal trophy or KUIII of money to bring such meeting about If Carlaris is to come back h will come back in all probability in time for the IJncoln llelds meeting and no spe ¬ cial would attract greater interest Those who saw the running of the Derby and the consummate ease with which Bub ¬ bling Over was its winner will hardly agree that Carlaris is a match for the son of North Star III but those who saw the son of Phalaris race at Tijuana are hard to con ¬ vince that Mr Bradleys colt is his master That is reason enough for the importance of such a meeting meetingUnfortunately Unfortunately Bubbling Over has scant op ¬ portunities in the big New York early closing stakes and according his only chance to verify a championship is to meet those which have engagements That is still another rea ¬ son for endeavoring to bring about a special There was general surprise at the general upset of the form shown by colts that ran in both the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby Display winner of the Preakncss Stakes cut no figure in the Derby and Blon din the colt that was only beaten a head in the Preakness Stakes raced no better at Churchill Downs than did Mr Salmons colt coltThen Then Rock Man which was thoroughly beaten in the Preakness Stakes stuck it out gamely in the Derby to finish third Bagen baggage had failed utterly in the Preakness Stakes while in the Derby he was second to Bubbling Over soundly beating those that beat him in the Preakness PreaknessThere There was something more than racing luck that brought about these changes in form Display was not off as well as he might have been in the Derby but there was not enough misfortune in the start to adequately account for his showing Blondin was in close quarters part of the way but both he and Display worn to have been beaten because Bubbling Over was able to maintain a high rate of speed throughout rather than to come back to the plodders that followed him all the way wayAs As for Bagenbaggjigi his two races would indicate that the difference in the going at Pimlico had all to do with his showing And it may be that the difference in the going had much to do with the performances of Display ind IJlomlin But with Bagvnhag gjigo this hccms to have been the chief cause for his showing showingPimlico Pimlico has a great deal more top soil than Churchill Downs and when Bugenbuggiigc waa called on lie appeared to tslip and tipruwi At Churchill Downs when he was culled on in a much more swiftly run race he picked up his opponents until he hud them all beiiUii except his HMKiikihlc stablemate
