GREENTREE STABLE DOUBLE Navigator and The Vintner Score i at Jamaica Ellis Pilots Both 3Irs Payne Whitneys Son of JJroomstick JJroomstick3Fnch 3Fnch the Ilcst in Southampton SouthamptonHandicap Handicap NEW YORK Nl Y May IS Navigator the Greentree Stables colt which had Pom pey driving to win the Wood Stakes when the Coe champion made his first appearance of the year was winner of the Southampton Handicap at Jamaica today It was over a mile and a sixteenth and was worth 5850 to the winner At the end Vespasian was right at the heels of Navigator and three lengths farther back the Rnncocas Stables Nichavo saved third from James Butlers Hang On This completed a double for G Ellis and the Greentree Stable for in the previous race Ellis had ridden The Vintner to victory An accident occurred when two horses fell in the opening race and their riders Madeira and Hudgins were rushed to the hospital Later it was found that both 1 had fortunately escaped serious injuries injuriesAnother Another interesting incident of the day was the return of Whiskalong to racing after an absence of two years He was an easy winner over the threequarters mile distance under the Harry Payne Whitney silks but he was aided considerably by leav ¬ ing the post fast in a bad start and the performance was not as impressive as it might have otherwise been beenThere There were nine starters in the Southamp ¬ ton Handicap and while Navigator did not win by any great margin he was pounds the best for he was pinned in on the rail vir ¬ tually all the way and it was only in the last eighth that Ellis found room to drive him through to victory It was a good start aild Vespasian as was expected set the pace Nichavo starting from the outside showed becoming speed to quickly go into second place while Naviga ¬ tor was on the rail back of the leading pair and going along well within himself himselfAmberjack Amberjack Hang On and High Star led the others and it was a fairly close bunch but at all times the interest centered in the first three Near the stretch turn Fator moved up with Nichavo until he was lapped on Vespasian but they still had Navigator pinned in on the rail and for an instant it seemed that the opportunity would never come for the son of Broomstick to get through though it was apparent all he needed was room roomIt It was a battle through the final eighth and there the opening occurred arid Naviga ¬ tor worked his way through to be home winner by a length going away awayNichavo Nichavo tired in the final drive and was beaten by three lengths for second place by Vespasian while Hang On was going well to finish at the heels of Nichavo NichavoAnother Another poor start resulted in the three quarters mile handicap the third race when with six starters at the post two were left Continued on twelfth page GREENTREE STABLE DOUBLE Continued from first page This was caused by Washington wheeling as the barrier arose while Wampee refused to start In spite of all this it provided an excellent three horse race when The Vintner Sepoy and Everglade fought it out in the order named Byway the other starter was badly outrun all the way wayThe The Vintner forced the pace throughout and Everglade was never far away from the Grcentree Stable fiveyearold Sepoy raced well next to the inner rail and the result was in doubt most of the way In wayIn the stretch Ellis went out just a bit with The Vintner carrying Everglade with him and in the run home they bumped each other but it was apparently accidental and did not seem to have any effect on the result As the leaders swung out Thurber rushed Sepoy up on the rail and an eighth out he seemed a possible winner but The Vintner hung on gamely in the final drive to save the day while Sepoy only beat Ever ¬ glade for second place by a narrow margin marginJ J J Murphys Rusovia was so much the best of the platers in the mile and an eighth fifth race that she took a good lead at the rise of the barrier and made every post a winning one Old Devastation was second throughout and captured that end of the purse throughoutThere while star Falcon was third throughout There were only five starters and there was a mysterious play on J A Coburns Locker ¬ bie He showed nothing in the race and was a distant fourth at the end The other starter was Edward Johnsons imported filly Rosewood and she was never close to the leaders at any time timeWhen When Dream Daddy and Hair Dresser fell at the head of the stretch in the opening dash it looked for an instant as though both P Madeira who rode Dream Daddy and G Hudgins who had the leg up on Hair Dresser injuryThe had suffered serious injury The accident had no effect on the result for both horses were well beaten and far back of the others when it occurred The race fell to Camilla from the Swingalong Stable and it was in marked contrast to her last previous effort in which she was badly beaten John Marrone II was the one to set the pace and Marcellus was in second place for most of the journey but Chalmers kept Camilla well up with the others and at the head of the stretch she found room on the inside insideIt It was a long hard drive home but the filly stuck gamely to her task and right at the end she was through to be the winner from John Marrone II Taffy Girl came with a determined rush at the end to be third Whiskalong thirdWhiskalong a son of Whisk Broom IL and Lady Hamburg IL which had been away from the races for a couple of years was j brought back by James Rowe in the three quarters mile second race and proved an easy winner when he led home William Ziegler Jrs Araby with Marshall Fields Tallwood saving third from Hardwood the G D Wid ¬ ener starter starterThe The start had much to do with the finish when the field left in straggling order and while Whiskalong left fast Briarbroom the one that seemed to have a royal chance for victory was so far back as to have no chance McAtee made every use of his ad ¬ vantage and he sent AVhiskalong into a long lead while Melrnor was leading the others Tallwood quickly worked his way up and Hardwood after leaving in a tangle moved up until he was third but the early effort took so much out of him that he tired in the stretch stretchWhiskalong Whiskalong was never seriously threatened to win by five lengths while Araby finished with excellent courage to be an easy second with Tallwood beating Hardwood two lengths for third When Maiben realized that Briar broom had no chance he eased him up and he finished last lastAt At the end of the program James Butlers Charade a daughter of Vulcain and Miss Puzzle was an easy winner over the five eighths mile routo Granny after beginning slowly closed a big gap to be second and third was the portion of Witchery which beat Tigress for tlu short end of the purse
