Here and There on the Turf Promises for August Where Haste Belongs Notable Toboggan Field On Turf Sensations While there is general regret that Bubbling Over the brilliant winner of the Kentucky Derby for Edward R Bradley has been de ¬ clared out of many of the big threeyearold features of the year he still remains eligible to a number of stakes at Saratoga in August AugustUnfortunately Unfortunately several of these are handicaps in which he would be called upon to meet older horses but they are races that may afford New Yorkers a view of the handsome big chestnut in action He is named for the Sara ¬ toga Handicap the Champlain Handicap and the Delaware Handicap each of which is for threeyearolds and over He was also named for the Miller Stakes at one and threesix ¬ teenths miles and the Saranac Handicap at a mile both of which are exclusively for ths threeyearolds The son of North Star III and Beaming Beauty is not an eligible to the Saratoga Cup In both the Miller Stakes and the Saranac Handicap there will come a chance for Bubbling Over to again meet Pompey and also Carlaris the Tijuana sensation being also named for both of those races racesMany Many will want some sort of a verification of the Kentucky Derby before being willing to admit that Bubbling Over is the master of Pompey but it is safe to say that 90 per cent of those who desire that confirmation did not see the running of the Kentucky Derby In that race Bubbling Over so conclusively proved his supremacy that it is hard to conceive of any race in which Mr Coes threeyearold would have a chance to beat Bubbling Over no matter what the distance distanceIt It is a bit different with Carlaris His races at Tijuana were so sensational that his meeting Bubbling Over would be a tremendously big thing for any day of racing The son of Pha laris is on the shelf at the present time recov ¬ ering from an operation recently performed on an infected leg and there is every hope that he will be fit and ready for his best in August so that he can keep his engagements in the Miller Stakes and the Saranac Handicap As a matter of fact he may be brought back before that time and it has already been sug ¬ gested that a special at the new Lincoln Reids in Chicago that would bring Bubbling Over and Carlaris together would be a tremendously big turf event In the meantime Joseph E Wideners Haste is being brought back to the races and before the Saratoga meeting falls due it is entirely possible that he will have taken a position among the threeyearolds At Belmont Park the one engagement made for Bubbling Over is in the Metropolitan Handicap and it is an engagement that is also shared by both Pompey and Haste but it is now known that Mr Bradley will not send his great colt on for that staked But there are chances for a meeting between Haste and Pompey PompeyPompey Pompey is not named for the Toboggan Han ¬ dicap which is to be decided at the big Nassau County track on Friday and that is the first engagement for Haste But both colts arc eligible to the famous old Withers Stakes and it is expected that will be their first meeting since the running of the Futurity last Sep ¬ tember Then for the Belmont Stakes at a mile and a half to be run June 12 they have a chance to meet again In that race the solitary Bradley representative is Barcolo BarcoloLast Last fall many were of the opinion that Haste was purely a sprinter This may prove to be the case this year but the race run by Pompey in the Derby just about forced the conviction that he is a miler at best If such is the case it may be found that Hast is capable of maintaining his speed as far as the son of Sun Briar and Cleopatra And should both colts be brought together in both the Withers Stakes and the Belmont Stakes that problem ought to be pretty well determined determinedIt It is hard to believe that Pompey ran his race in the Kentucky Derby and it will not do to discard him from the championship rivalry on that one showing but as far as public performances go at this time aspirants to the championship have no reason to fear him as he was feared before the running of last Satur ¬ day He may be an utterly different horse when he races over his own training grounds at Belmont Park and the pity of it is that Bubbling Over is not engaged at that meeting The chances for a notable renewal of the Toboggan Handicap on Friday seem to be excellent from the weights that have just been announced by Walter S Vosburgh VosburghIt It is natural that Sarazen should be at the tup of the list with 132 as his impost and eliminating Worthmore winner last year and Wise Counsellor his stable companion Silver Fox comes next under 124 pounds Sercnader i in under 122 pounds and Bracadale is at the jaue notch but so little has been done with the Rancocas Stable fiveyearold that it is not expected he will be sent to the post postMiuo Miuo has been thoroughly fitted with racing and he has to take up 119 pounds just one pound more than has been assigned H P Whitneys Noah Turf Idol is in under 115 pounds and a speed marvel from Kentucky Captain Hal is in exceedingly well with 112 pounds as his impost impostRock Rock Man and Haste arc at the same notch with 111 pounds and Canter heads the three yearolds with 112 pounds as his burden It is more than likely that after the running of the race there will be a revision of these weights as far as Haste is concerned The son of Maintcnant and Miss Malaprop has been coining up to the races in a fashion that sug ¬ gests readiness for a brilliant threequarters nd at this time though he has not yet been to the post it is predicted that the one to beat him will be the winner winnerHam Ham Keene has been patient with Haste and he shows the result of this patient train ¬ ing in his present condition Haste is ready for the colors and a race to what he has shown in private will make him stand out as a truly remarkable sprinter sprinterLater Later in the mile of the Withers Stakes it is confidently expected that ho will also show that threequarters is by no means his limit It is unfortunate that from time to time there are circulated wild rumors by this or that news association which knows little or nothing of the turf These rumors always oc ¬ casion something of a stir until they are run down and one after another is found to be groundless groundlessOne One of the most recent was a published report that W R Coe was dissatisfied with the running of Pompey in the Kentucky Derby and that he had displaced W II Karrick as trainer of his stable There was no vestage of truth in the story and it was vehemently denied by Mr Cos The defeat was taken in a sporting spirit and Mr Coe said he had absolutely no complaint to make after the running of the race raceAnother Another wild rumor that was abroad just before the running of the Derby was that Mr Coe had suffered a heart attack At the time Mr Coe was enjoying the best of health healthStill Still another with which a sensation was attempted was a report that Carlaris was to be an eleventh hour nominee to start in the Derby and that he would be named through the entry box at the last possible moment At the time Carlaris was convalescing from an operation on his infected leg and no one with any knowledge of racing could honestly send out any such story storyThere There is enough in racing to furnish legiti ¬ mate sensations without these wild rumors that it would almost seem were manufactured out of whole cloth by some who know so little of racing that they have to dig into other fields to find a subject on which to write
