COLLINSVILLE 111 June I Instead of muddy going prevailing as expected because of yesterdays rains the racing strip at Fair mount was in perfect condition and con ¬ tributed materially to the good sport on tap There was again an absence of the better quality of horses here but the racing did not suffer and the public was eminently successful in landing on winners winnersThe The diminutive Philpot under contract to the Chula Vista Stable carried off honors of the afternoon with three successive vic ¬ tories and with a bit better judgment he would have registered four successes Ho was beaten by a matter of inches on his con ¬ tract employers Golden Laura prior to inaugurating his series ot triumphs triumphsThe The only time he was called on to display his best riding ability was astride Bulletin The latter was in with seven others in tho feature race It was at threequarters and the Polk Laffoon representative was at pro ¬ hibitive odds He displayed the most speed from the start but was pressed hard throughout by Stampdale but managed to hold on long enough to finish a short half length in advance of the strong contender Philpot profited by the mistake of racing Golden Laura wide which cost him the race on her for he stayed close to the inner rail with Bulletin and the difference in ground saved between Bulletin and Stampdale at the stretch turn gave Bulletin the oppor tunity to earn the purse Princess Pan fin ¬ ished in third place placeIN IN SPIRITED FINISH FINISHThe The second race in which seven twoyear olds started developed a spirited finish with Royal Rally the winner primarily due to the ground he saved at the stretch turn and sub sequently during the stretch run Golden Laura was the favored one and she was prob ¬ ably the best but she was ridden wide in the last quarter which enabled Royal Rally to beat her home by a matter of inches The ground saving action on the part of Shasta Love was also responsible for her close prox ¬ imity to the leaders at the end Golden I Iiura iura just managing to beat her home There was some excitement before the race when Hatha ¬ way got the better of Huntamer and ran away half a mile before he was brought under control She showed an early flight of speed in the race before retiring retiringT T J Pendergast made a promising debut here when his Ailcen P a staunchly backed favorite was home before some good sprint ers that engaged in the third race at five and onehalf furlongs Favored by her light weight and given a good ride she showed the way from the start and at all times held the others safe Texas was more prominent than the others and followed the leader closely but gave way slightly in the last sixteenth The battle for third place was a sharp one with Bellfont succeeding in out ¬ staying Music Shop Burkes Boy was a dis ¬ appointment in the race ODonnell taking him back sharply when it appeared he might suffer interference and he was far back thereafter thereafterMrs Mrs T J Carrolls Spats made a runaway of the opening race winning by a big mar ¬ gin There were a dozen starters in tho race and Spats displaying his best form and from a fast beginning moved promptly into a good lead which he increased in the stretch to win as his rider pleased The battle for second place was a spirited one Northern Star saving ground during the entire stretch drive and getting up in the final strides to down Kingsclere The latter had followed the leader closest in the early part but waa forced out to outstay the fast going Good Times for third place Good Times waa Continued on twentieth pace TRIPLE FOR PHILPOT Continued from first page away in a tangle and showed a smart per ¬ formance to finish as close as he did after his faulty beginning beginningJ J H Limbird scored his first purse win ¬ ning in the third which brought together a band of platers to race at a mile and a six ¬ teenth Talequa registered for him in ap ¬ proved and easy fashion winning as the diminutive Philpot pleased Willies Maid an extreme outsider finished second and Blarney Stone landed in third place It was a contrasting effort to that which he showed on Royal Rally that Cheatham put up on Blarney Stone in this race Pie raced him wide for practically the entire way but he managed to overhaul some of the contenders during placeSome the stretch and land in third place Some of the better grade of platers made the contest in the sixth race a six fur ¬ long affair and it brought a spectacular duel Meddling Mattie Romp and Batsman finish ¬ ing short necks apart after having taken part in a hard battle all during the stretch Frogatte displayed good riding skill here and he was the main contributing factor in Meddling Matties success
