Here and There on the Turf Silver Fox Fails Again Galetians Quality Princess Doreen s Victory A Best for Pompey When Silver Fox was so thoroughly beaten in the running of the Toboggan Handicap on the opening day of the Belmont Park meeting it was generally accepted that his bad showing could be attributed to the surface of the new Widener Course He came right back in the SpcDtl Handicap over the same course Thurs ¬ day and again he was soundly beaten beatenNo No fitter horse went to the post than the graj He had shown Hildrcth enough to sug ¬ gest that he was right at the top of his form but he did not show that form in the running of the race Taking these two races it is just about convincingly shown that Silver Fox docs not like that straight running through the Widener Course CourseBetween Between the running of the Toboggan and the Speed Handicaps both over the Widener Course Silver Fox showed his present worth hcn he raced threequarters over the main course in 111 and was an easy winner Thus it would seem that it is not the top dres ¬ sing of the Widener Course but the course it ¬ self that is not to the liking of the colt coltIt It would be just as well to forget Silver Fox no far as the Widener Course is concerned until he learns more about running down that straight lane It may be that he will never show to advantage over that course but there was surely nothing in his Toboggan or his Speed Handicap performances to recommend him when the race is over the new racing strip stripThe The victory of Galetian in the Speed Han ¬ dicap brings to mind his high promise last spring When he was started in the Toboggan Handicap the opening day of the present Bel niont Park meeting it was his first appear ¬ ance under colors since May 23 of last year when under 122 pounds he was the winner of the Juvenile Stakes racing fiveeighths through the straight course in 57 57In In that notbblc performance he gave as good a filly as Friars Carse ten pounds and far back of him came Pompey which later raced his way to the twoyearold champion ¬ ship And Pompey only shouldered 1 15 pound in the Juvenile Stakes It was truly unfor ¬ tunate that Galetian went amiss shortly after his victory Galetian was brought to the races by A J Joyner on April 25 of last year at the United Hunts Meeting and was a winner at the first asking when he ran a half mile in A5 He followed that up by winning ths Snorting Plate at the same meeting Next he was raced in tbc Colorado Stakes at Jamaica and there he suffered his one defeat because he ran out at the head of the stretch and had to be pulled up by Sande SandeThus Thus it will be seen that but for this hs would have been unbeaten as a twoyearold fof the Juvenile Stakes was his only other ap ¬ pearance It is probable that his running out came from the fact that he had been ac ¬ customed to racing and training over the straight course at Belmont Park and the short Jamaica turn was strange to him This year Joyner has brought him back and while he was beaten in the Toboggan Handicap he atoned for that defeat handsomely when he took the Speed Handicap HandicapIt It was feared that Galetians wind was badly affected but the way be came home the win ¬ ner in the teeth of a halfgale of wind would Jnake it seem that be has been cured of that affliction Just now Galetian has every right to go to a high place among the threeyear olds oldsPrinces Princes Doreen the queenly daughter of Spanish Prince II and Lady Doreen by Ogden another good one bred by John E Madden has come back to her winning form That was demonstrated when she won the Inaugural Handicap at Latonia on Thursday This mare now in her fifth year has been a great racing machine as was evidenced last year She has been hard at it for a long time and no more honest thoroughbred stands on iron She has been campaigned everywhere over all sorts of distances and under all sorts of weights but she goes on giving up her best cheerfully cheerfullyThe The Inaugural Handicap victory is her first success since her return from Tijuana where she was sent to fill her engagement in the Coffroth Handicap that was won in such sen ¬ sational style by the threeyearold Carlaris But the Princess was returned from the Mex ¬ ican track to race in the Dixie Handicap at Pimlico and she has virtually been kept in constant training ever since she reached racing age agePrincess Princess Doreen has stood up under this drilling marvellously and her winning of the Inaugural Handicap is proof that she is not ready to call it a day It was hoped that by this time there would have been an announcement of the dates for the race meetings in Chicago An effort was made to have the schedule arranged at a recent meeting held in the Congress Hotel but owing to the absence of Thomas Bourke who represents the Illinois Jockey Club nothing was given out regarding the meeting plans for either Hawthorne or Lincoln Fields In the meantime Mr Bourke has announced the dates he will take for the Illinois Jockey Club and his is the only club that has made any positive announcement announcementIn In the meantime the work of constructing the big Lincoln Fields track is going along apace and with the big force of men who are kept hard at it that magnificent racing ground will be ready when wanted wantedNever i Never has there been a race course laid out j with more magnificence and when it is com ¬ I pleted it will surely be one of the greatest of which the turf of any country can boast W H Karrick has decided that Pompey is to have a rest W R Coes champion will not be seen at the races for a time at least and there is a hope that he will profit and come back the colt that his work in training has promised all through the spring springNo No colt that ran as Pompey did in the morn ¬ ing should fail as he has in the afternoon and whatever the reason a short letup can as ¬ suredly do no harm His races have been a mystery to the best judges for ever since he has been pronounced ready his speed in private has been impressive His temper through it all has been even and while be impresses as being anything but a robust thoroughbred there never has been a time in his workouts when he seemed jaded from his preparation preparationIt It is hoped this late decision to ease him up will bring better results when he comes back to the races Willis Sharpe Kilmer has done a big thing for the Remount Service in donating a service to his stallion Sun Briar to an army matron This great stallion has already firmly estab ¬ lished himself as a stock horse and great care will be taken in selecting the mare with which he is to be mated The plan undoubtedly will be to send the yearling to tli3 market and the proceeds from the sale will be used for the remount work It is remembered that the good filly Siren was the result of such a gift mating to Man o War and she brought 9000 in the sales ring It is a sure thing that a Sun Briar foal would also bring a handsome figure to the Remount Association
