BLIND PLAY BY A NOSE Beats Chilhowee in Thrilling Fin ¬ ish in Greenport Handicap aicTagrgart Nearly Tosses Off Victory by byEasing Easing Up Log Cabin Stable StableRepresentative Representative NEW YORK N T June 4 While there was no stake down for decision in the Friday program at Belmont Park the sport was first class and the best race of the day the Green port Handicap furnished the real thrill of the afternoon It resulted in Blind Play from the IMS Cabin Stud Stable being re ¬ turned the winner but it was by hardly more than an inch from the Chilhowee Stables Chilhowee This fellow showing entirely new form was just a stride short of victory and a few feet after the finish was passed saw him in front frontThe The day was a bit dreary with a threat of rain in the air and it was anothed day that those who attended without top coats were out of luck The crowd was a big one and as most of those present were equipped with the top coats there were no complaints registered against the weather conditions conditionsIn In the Greenport Handicap where the fin ¬ ish produced such a thrill Tommy McTaggart who had the mount on Blind Playhad mJch to do with it being a close finish When he was safely in front with Blind Play he eased him slightly and then he had trouble having him in full stride again to save the day dayFrom From a good start the field raced well bunched in the early stages with Gamble I showing the way Blind Play was on the inside holding his position but Chilhowee dropped back rather badly in the first quarter Leaving the back stretch McTag ¬ gart shook up Blind Play and taking him outside of Gamble as he made his run he forced the rest of the running Laura Dianti and Mirador were closely lapped on Blind Play but McTaggart had the son of Fair Play under restraint and when he permitted him to run in the stretch he at once opened up a good lead gart glanced around and seeing no reason for worry he eased his mount slightly But Chilhowee was just beginning to rim and his move was hidden for he was coming along on the outside In that last eighth he was catching Blind Play at every stride and it seemed inevitable he would be the winner Continued on twentieth page BLIND PLAY BY A NOSE Continued from first page but McTaggart saw the danger and saved the day but by a srant nose noseCheap Cheap ones to race a mile was the first offering and an accident came out of the running when Julie generally considered as the best of the company bled while enjoying a good lead and she had to be pulled up before racing threeeighths With Julie out of the contention it left Gold Button in com ¬ mand and she was good enough to lead her rivals for the remainder of the journey Donnavideo took second place while Insulate closed with good courage on the rail to take third thirdAfter After both Flaherty and Bandoline had been withdrawn from the fiveeighths juve ile dash that was second it only left three to perform Of these N Loscalzos Avisack II proved easily best to win by a good margin while Blue Fire from the Newtondale Stable outgamed Pop Bell to take second place placeAvisack Avisack II was a bit troublesome at the post and in one of her fractious moves she unseated Fields When the start came Avi ¬ sack II was still a bit unruly and she swerved repeatedly but she was good enough to hold the other two perfectly safe She raced the fiveeighths over the Widener Course in 597s which is a record for the course courseIt It was a good band of sprinters that came together in the threequarters through the Widener Course and Storm King from the stable of J E Davis was winner when he led home J F Adams J Fred A with J A Harpers All in All the one to be third thirdThere There was some delay at the post but the start was a good one Then early in the action All in All jumped into the lead with Martha Martin J Fred A and Whatll I Do not far away awayMartha Martha Martin was going exceedingly well when there came some crowding that knocked her back badly and Sande was forced to take up to avoid a fall In the meantime Storm King had moved to the inner rail and Turner sent him along at his best pace With nothing to bother him in that position he forged to the front in the final eighth J Fred A challenged him in the final dash but the Davis sprinter proved best All in All weakened right at the end to lose the place toJ Fred A AThe The fifth was a four and a half furlongs dash through the Widener Course for two yearold maiden fillies and it brought victory to Mr Pembrokes Glen Sprite a fast run ¬ ning daughter of Glencairn and Sun Kiss bred by the late Joseph Marrone Education played an important part in the victory and William Hogan is to be complimented on the way he brought the filly to the race
