FATAL DART AND MUNDEN Prove Winning Combination in Thorncliffes Main Contest AVI Hi Finishes Close and Exciting TORONTO Ont June 4 Mrs L A Liv ¬ ingstons Fatal Dart made his rivals look cheap in todays feature race at Thorncliffe when he won the Blairgowrie Purse a dash of a mile Fatal Dart heavily backed and ridden by Munden had a five lengths margin over Fairbank winning well in hand In the early running the Livingston gelding was outrun but when straightened out on the back stretch moved up stoutly and passed the pacemaker Seven Oaks at the half mile post drew away into a long lead round ¬ ing the far turn and thereafter the race was never afterward in doubt The field was strung cut at the end with Seven Oaks third beaten by five lengths for second place and then came Tricky Take Off another three lengths away awaySurprises Surprises came with the running of the first four races and in all of them driving finishes ensued The winners in all of them were in doubt until the last twenty yards The finish in the third race was particularly close when Hanky Rice Gaffer and Botch passed the judges noses apart apartThompson Thompson rode two winners Vcnizelos and Royal Pearl The latter victory came in the running of the fourth race when he wore clown the tiring Hillardo to beat him by a head in the final strides stridesThe The conditions of two of the races the fourth and fifth called for Canadianbreds Another large crowd was on hand and spec ¬ ulation was keen keenJIOYAL JIOYAL PEARL BY INCHES INCHESAnother Another close finish came with the run ¬ ning of the fourth race a dash of a mile for Canadianbreds when Royal Pearl came from behind in the stretch run to wear down the tiring Hillardo to get up in the final strides to win by a head Hillardo outran his rivals from the start and drew away into a long lead on the back stretch He kept going away rounding the far turn but in the stretch tired badly Royal Pearl raced in hand the first half mile and when Thompson made his move rounding the far turn he moved up with a good burst of speed and in the final drive wore down the tiring pace ¬ maker Just in Fun tired badly in the last quarter and at the end was driving hard to stall off Harp of Prophecy Whatever chance Southern Glow may have had was ruined at the first turn when she was sharply cut off by Hillardo when the latter cut across to the inside rail A dozen maiden twoyearolds went to the post in the first race a dash of fiveeighths for which Theresa Joan and Swizzle were the choices The former was always fa ¬ vorite Neither of them finished in the money The winner turned up in Signola running in the colors of Stanley Gillespie Eignola began from the extreme outside and Abel was forced to take the outside to get to the leaders Entering the home stretch before going wide Signola closed with a rush and catching the pacemakers tiring in the final eighth managed to get up in the last fifty yards and won going away at the end by three parts of a length from Osman Eda C was third beaten a length and a half for second place Then came Lillian L which made the pace the first half Theresa Joan was never prominent Swizzle began slowly and was shuffled back in the first eighth eighthVEXIZELOS VEXIZELOS GOOD JIACE JIACEVenlzelos Venlzelos was the winner in the second race Hidden by Thompson he was taken in hand in the early stages and was rated off the pace He saved ground at the turns and when called on in the stretch run re ¬ sponded full of courage In the final eighth when Glib and Golden Locks began to weaken Venizelos charged on them and in the last twenty yards he caught and passed Glib to win by half a length Lieutenant Farrell was third and Golden Locks fourth The latter tired badly when Mann went to a drive She probably needed this race Marcellus and Shining Light both were away slowly and the former raced wide most of the dis ¬ tance It was a mighty tight fit between the first three in the third race when Hanky Rice Gaffer and Botch finished noses apart As a matter of fact the backers of the three thought that their horses had won A long delay at the post ensued before starter Cassidy sent them away Mumbo Jumbo was on his bad behavior and when the start was finally made he got caught in the bar ¬ rier Gaffer had the early speed and in the first eighth drew away into a two lengths lead He held this field safe into the home ¬ stretch but in the final eighth tired Hanky Rice the winner slipped through next the inside rail and it was only in the very last stride that he managed to poke his nose in front of Gaffer which finished in between the winner and Botch BotchA A desperate stretch drive came with the running of the sixth race in which the odds on favorite Flying Cloud just managed tc get up in the closing strides fo beat Martha lloose out by a nose On the post Byron started out like a winner winnerII II K Watkins purchased the twoyearold All Virginia from J W Pangle
