MY COLONEL TRIUMPHS Wins for His New Owners on the Occasion of First Asking Old Laces Lucky Victory After a aMost Most Spectacular Contest Big Crowd Turns Out COLLINSVILLE HI June S My Colonel recently acquired at the Wiedemann dis ¬ persal sale at Latonia by Messrs T J Pen dergast and E K Thornton racing under the nom de course of Penthorn Stable made good at the first asking when he took the measure of a good band of sprinters that met in the Hotel Greeters of America Purse which featured this afternoons Fairmount offering and attracted an immense attend ¬ ance to the track trackMy My Colonel displayed a highly creditable performance even if he was lightly weighted He flashed into a long lead immediately after the start and raced under restraint all during the last quarter to win with much in reserve Princess Pan another lightly weighted one raced to second place with Stampdale third thirdThere There were twelve starters in the race with Hourmore the favored one Any chance he might have had wont glimmering soon after the start when L Lang took him back completely out of it and raced him wide thereafter He closed an immense gap dur ¬ ing the last half mile but was unable to overcome the severe handicap and failed of getting a portion of the purse With good riding the McGill representative would have made it interesting for My Colonel ColonelIDEAL IDEAL KACING CONDITIONS CONDITIONSIdeal Ideal weather and perfect racing conditions served as a magnet for bringing out one of the best crowds that has witnessed Fair mount Park racing excepting on a holiday occasion Over five hundred of the Hotel Greeters Associtaion from all parts of the country now in convention here were at the course and donated a handsome silver cup to the winner of the feature race named In their honor AH the racing was spirited and highly enjoyed enjoyedOne One of the most spectacular contests wit ¬ nessed here during the meeting came in the sixth race when four of the five starters raced in cavalry style for nearly half a mile and it eventually resulted in a lucky victory for Old Lace by virtue of D Caseys hustling tactics astride the Randolph filly Candy Light as the favored one in the race but Pools timidity coupled with an inner rail position she had brought her undoing for slie was continuously taken back and in the final drive she succumbed to Shasta Negra The latter was best but lost the race when Philpot took her extremely wide at the stretch turn She came determinedly in the last sixteenth but missed getting to Old Lace by a short half length lengthDR DR CLARK TO FORE FOREDr Dr Clark carrying the colors of the the ¬ atrical magnate A Pantagcs was returned victor in the National Old Trail Claiming Handicap at a mile and onesixteenth serv ¬ ing as secondary feature Dr Clark was forced to do his best to land the victory and he had little to spare to win from Edward Gray with Dr Cardenas following There might have been a different result had Dr Cardenas been free of interference He suf ¬ fered much at the first turn when Froggatte on Edward Gray came sharply across It almost caused Dr Cardenas to go down He was again going well at the lower turn when again forced back and all during the stretch he was in tight quarters He showed a win ¬ ning performance and with a clear course might have won Edward Gijay only beat him by a head for second place Abstract was a disappointment here and raced far out of it for most of the way Major T C McDowells colors were carried to victory by his good colt Scholarship which led home a highly regarded band in the open ¬ er Scholarship conceded much weight to all the others but he raced as if much the best and came away when called on in the stretch to win with much in reserve over Shasta Crafton The latter also performed well for he closed an immense gap after racing Wide at the stretch turn Gnome Sec ¬ ond that had been one of the early leaders began tiring in the last eighth but was good enough to finish in advance of the poorly ridden Vennie Sue Edna Mae the early leader gave way after reaching the stretch stretchT T C McDowells colors made it a doublo when Court Lady in the second repeated Scholarships initial success Court Ladys victory was a big surprise for she was held lightly and furnished a pronounced upset by her easy victory over Ailecn P and Cross Village The latter pair were backed to tho exclusion of the others and seemed in a fair way a quarter from the finish to have tho race between them but both succumbed readily to the rush of Court Lady when it came to the real racing Ailcen P entered for 2100 was claimed by J II Buscher at a cost of 3100 3100Brown Brown Leaf furnished the upset of tho Continued on twentieth page MY COLONEL TRIUMPHS Continued from first page third race when he beat Street Liz by a matter of inches in the last stride after a terrific drive Street Liz had priorly dis ¬ posed of Island Fairy and appeared a certain winner in the last sixteenth but the winner coming with a great rush was up in the final stride to gain the verdict Island Fairy had shown the most speed in the early stages but Street Liz followed her in close style causing Island Fairy to give way in the stretch Brown Leaf had been a follower until the last quarter where he began com ¬ ing fast to carry him to victory Frances Jane was highly thought of here but she was allowed to race wide all during the last three furlongs She was claimed by C Graffag nini at a cost of 1500
