Here and There on the Turf Chance Plays Victory Belmonts Prospects ThreeYearOld Situation The Biggs Handicap Louis Feusfel took his lime with Chance Play the chestnut son of Fair Play and QuEIle Chance by Ethelbert and he was rexvarded on Monday at Bclmont Park when the Log Cabin Stud colt was a winner at the first asking It is true that it was only a threequarters dash over the Widener Course and the going was muddy but it was a victory and one that should do the colt no end of good in his prep ¬ aration for the Belmont Stakes to be run on Saturday There is a wide difference between threequarters and a mile and a half but Chance Play had a deal of exercise galloping before he was sent to the races and the three quarters was in the nature of a test of speed He took up 125 pounds and his victory was impressive for the reason that he ran faster than as good a horse as George D Wideners Galetian at the end of the race This Belmont Stakes is generally looked upon as a gift for Samuel D Riddles Crusader and it will indeed take a fast and staying threeyearold to take his measure on Saturday no matter what is the condition of the track He has shown his ability to race through muddy going and his victory in the Suburban Handicap last Satur ¬ day was a truly impressive feat when he simply cantered to victory victoryBut But there are not a few that have earned the right to try conclusions with Mr Riddles colt and Chance Play is the latest of these to be uncovered Rock Star of the Brookmeade Stable has been pointing for this race sincr early in the year and Gwyn Tompkins has no reason to complain of the manner in which the son of Traprock and Star Emerald has been training Rhinock third to Bagenbaggage and Boot to Boot in the Latonia Derby is an eligible that is fit and ready and a proved stayer It is unfortunate for Mr Bradley that his only Belmont Stakes eligible is Barcolo and it b not expected that he will be shipped to New York for the engagement Bagenbaggagc and Bubbling Over would have been a wonder ful hand for the race with one of them winner of the Latonia Derby and the other winner of the Kentucky Derby but these two stars will have most of their opportunities in Illinois and Kentucky and should they be through right now they will have earned a high place in turf history historyEspino Espino William Zieglers good Belmont Stakes eligible is another that must be seri ¬ ously considered among the probables This colt was right on top of Crusader and Haste in the running of the Withers Stakes and ho surely is a long route traveler He was hurt in the running of that race and it is hoped that he will be ready for the question on Sat ¬ urday urdayOthers Others that may start are Blondin Naviga ¬ tor Macaw Banton and Mars so that altogether the renewal of the old race should be a worthy one It is not until the Saratoga meeting comes that there is real hope for a meeting between Bubbling Over and Carlaris unless these two great colts are brought together at Fairmount where both arc engaged At Saratoga both are eligible to the Miller Stakes But what is of greater importance possibly is the fact that Crusader winner of the Suburban Handi ¬ cap is also among the eligibles to that mile and threesixteenths race Several turfmen who saw both the Bubbling Over victory in the Kentucky Derby and the Crusader victory in the Suburban Handicap have expressed the opinion that the Riddle colt is the master of the son of North Star III and Beaming Beauty Others who may not place Crusader at the top admit that he is certainly qualified to give Bubbling Over a stiff argument Then of course there are those who will proclaim Car ¬ laris the logical champion until he is beaten beatenSeldom Seldom has there been three better colts striving for the championship and if all three are brought to the post in the Miller Stakes it cannot fail to be one of the most remarkable races of all the year It is fitting that the Maryland Jockey Club should add the Riges Handicap to its stake list No man in Maryland did more for the turf than the late William P Riggs who for so long directed the destinies of the Maryland Jockey Club No man put racing on a higher plane than the late secretary of that famous old jockey club and while there need be no me ¬ morial race to keep his memory green it is a fitting testimonial to such a giant of the sport And it is also fitting that this race should be at a mile and a half and that it should have the bountiful value of 25000 in added money moneyThe The Riggs Handicap will be a handicap for the threeyearolds and will have its first run ¬ ning at the fall meeting at Pimlico That meeting was already rich in its handsome values and the addition of another 25000 stake race is right along in the line of the lib ¬ eral policy that was inaugurated by the late W P Riggs and carried on with such satisfying success under his able direction directionThe The fact that this race will come in Novem ¬ ber makes it an ideal one to put a final stamp of greatness on the champion three yearold The championship should be decided before the date of the running of this race and the champion should he be seen at the post naturally and should concede weight to the others Then the fact that it is at a mile and a half makes it peculiarly fitting as a memorial to Mr Riggs He ever strove for races that would mean something and was responsible for more long distance races at Pimlico than are found at any meeting of like duration durationThe The Riggs Handicap is sure to instantly be ¬ come one of the truly important races of the With Carlaris out in active training again and showing real speed in the morning it should not be long before the Tijuana champion will be seen under colors at Collinsville It was truly unfortunate that this great colt by reason of an injury was denied his chance to race in the Kentucky Derby He was looked upon as one of the most eligible of the three yearolds when ho went amiss and now it means much that he is on his way to other triumphs triumphsUnfortunately Unfortunately Bubbling Over also by reason of an injury was thrown out of training long enough to prevent his being started in the Latonia Derby which fell to his stablemate Bagenbaggage and now a doubt exists of his being made ready for the Fairmount Derby It had been intended to race him in both of these races and the prospect of his meeting Carlaris in the Fairmount Derby gave it a particular and peculiar interest Now this meeting will probably be deferred but the meeting is almost a certainty later in the year When this meeting comes it will be a great race no matter where it is to be staged It would seem that a mistake was made in not naming Crusader for the Brooklyn Handi ¬ cap which opens the meeting of tfie Queen County Jockey Club at the Aqueduct course on Monday The easy fashion in which tho son of Man o War galloped off with the Suburban Handicap would have made him a bright prospect for this race and there is no reason to suspect that he would have been handicapped at more than 104 pounds the weight he carried in the Suburban Handicap That victory would have brought his weight to 107 pounds with the penalty and taking a line through his Belmont Park victory ho 1 is well able to carry the adidtional three I pounds poundsOne One regret is that the lack of the engagement robs Crusader of the chance to equal the per j formances of Friar Rock as a threeyearbid j when in 1916 he was winner of the Brooklyn and Suburban handicaps and then the Saratoga Cup That Is indeed a brilliant record for a i threeyearold and is a feat of which the j illustrious Man o War could not boast Whilo i he was the wonder horse of his year the only j time he met other than threeyearolds was in the match with Sir Barton and at the time Sir Barton was a lame horse horseCrusader Crusader is the sort that will not lack for opportunity and the way in which he won tho Suburban Handicap should convince that he is well qualified to meet the best of every ag division
