CAPTAIN HAL WONDER His Success in Statler Hotel Han ¬ dicap Remarkable Feat Carries Crushing Impost of 137 Pounds and Wins in New Rec ¬ ord Time by Four Lengths COLLINSVILLE ill June 12 A A Kaisers Capain Hal gave a remarkable per ¬ formance in the Statler Hotel Handicap when he carried the crushing impost of 137 pounds to an easy victory in the fast time of 145 for a mile and onesixteenth and reduced the track record by one and two fifths seconds Cudgeller finished in second place and King Nadi third Hourmore and Dr Clark were the only other starters in the race which was worth 7010 net to the winner winnerCaptain Captain Hal was subjected to a tryinf performance right from the start for Cud ¬ geller with an impost of only 105 pounds forced a terrific pace going the first half mile in better than 47 seconds and the three quarters under 11J Pool rode a patient and perfect race for he kept Captain Hal re ¬ strained and when Cudgeller began display ¬ ing signs of tiring he readily sent Captain Hal into the lead and all during the stretch he was sitting still and in the last seventy yards began easing up his mount Cudgeller continued gamely but showed signs of dis ¬ tress on his return to the scales scalesKing King Nadi raced disappointingly He was benefited greatly by the fast pace and kept directly in the wake of the leaders during the first threequarters He began showing signs of weakening just before the stretch was reached and C Lang applied the whip but he failed badly and had to be roused hard near the end to outstay Hourmore for third place There was comment before the race over alloting 137 pounds on Captain Hal and only 130 on King Nadi The impost seemed to be greatly in favor of the latter as he had beaten Captain Hal at a difference of three pounds in King Nadis favor Judg ¬ ing by the impressiveness of Captain Hals victory the handicappers were fully justified in their weight allotment of the two horses horsesThe The big crowd appreciated Captain Hals performance and gave him a big demonstra ¬ tion on his return to the stands standsAnother Another purse fell to H D Brown when his homebred Shasta Lad just managed to outstay Candy Rock after a hard effort Shasta Grafton a stablemate to the winner landing in third place Shasta Lad and Candy Rock fought it strenuously all during the last eighth Shasta Lad proving the gamer Candy Rock began slowly and suf ¬ fered some when Shasta Lad forced him wide at the stretch turn Shasta Grafton displayed the most speed in the early stages and he held on gamely in the stretch to head the others Jockey Froggatte on Candy Rock lodged a claim of foul against the winner but it was not allowed allowedThe The introductory number a mile race brought an upset when Bulletin heavily backed failed badly and finished in third Continued on twentieth page CAPTAIN HAL WONDER Continued from first page place David I winning handily from Fire Under the latter tiring completely after hav ¬ ing shown the most speed for threequarters David L raced close to Bulletin in the early stages and when the latter weakened David L moved into command with a rush and had the race safe all during the stretch Fire Under suffered some at the first turn where he met interference and the incompetent Cheatham thereafter was unequal to the task the colt coming on steadily on his own courage to be up in the final stride to out ¬ stay Bulletin for second place placeThe The M Lowenstein colors made it a double for the afternoon when his Cup Bearer slipped through next the inner rail during the stretch run to overhaul Long Point and Rundark which were fighting it out and had been racing in close proximity from the start The last seventy yards found Cup Bearer drawing away with Long Point also parting company from Rundark Gco Groom the favorite raced far out of it for most of the way and performed far below expectations expectationsHarned Harned Brothers Reputation shared part honors with Captain Hal when he accounted for the Burlington Trail Handicap at three quarters serving at the secondary feature of the afternoon It was Reputations third successive victory in as many starts over the track It was his best performance here too for he reduced the track record by threefifths of a second when he covered the distance in 1 11 Glister made it possible for him to establish the new mark for she forced Reputation to race at his fastest pace from the start She followed him closely throughout and was many lengths in advance of Beau Butler at the end Beau Butler only managed to outstay The World by a matter of inches for third place placePreety Preety Politicians injury sustained in her last start when she was cut down is not as grave as first supposed and her owner K Pitt is confident that she will be saved for racing after a long rest
