Here and There on the Turf Shift to Aqueduct The Brooklyn Handicap Widener Course Form Steeplechase Program And now the New York racing will swing over to the old Aqueduct course for the twenty lays meeting of the Queens County Jockey Club The racing at Belmont Park has never been more successful than it was at the meeting that came to a close Saturday but as usual patrons always welcome a change from one track to another Race patrons like horses become track sore no matter where the racing is conducted and it is human nature to welcome the change to new surroundings For the opening of the Aqueduct meeting it is the often contested Brooklyn Handicap that is the bright and particular feature and it is a renewal of the race that should be entirely in keeping with its best traditions The older division of the handicap horses is a bit weak this year but there are many sturdy threeyearolds to keep the handicaps in the forefront of racing interest so that no com ¬ plaint will stand up even without a Grey Lag Mad Hatter Mad Play Exterminator Whisk Broom H Borrow Cudgel or the like likeAnd And looking the Brooklyn Handicap over since its first running away back in 1887 with its memorable finish with Dry Monopole Blue Wing and Hidalgo closely lapped lappedat at the finish there have been seven threeyearolds in its history that have been returned its win ¬ ner The first of these was in 1901 when Conroy led Herbert and Standing home In 1903 Irish Lad was its winner from Gunfire and Heno and in 1907 Superman won from Beacon Light and Nealon Then the following year another Kecne threeyearrold was victori ¬ ous when Celt won from Fair Play and Master Robert but that year all three of the placed horses were threeyearolds threeyearoldsFollowing Following the Celt victory the next three yearold to win was when Friar Rock beat Pennant and Slumber II And it will be remembered that the same year Friar Rock also was the winner of the Suburban Handicap and the Saratoga Cup from older horses In 1919 all three placed positions fell to the threeyearolds when Eternal was first Pur ¬ chase second and Questionaire third The only other threeyearold to be the winner of the Brooklyn was when Grey Lag beat two puch good older horses as John P Grier and Exterminator in 1921 Thus it will be seen that threeyearolds have played an important part in the Brooklyn frequently frequentlyThe The fact of the Belmont Stakes being run on Saturday and the Brooklyn Handicap on Monday puts two hard races rather close together for the threeyearolds but the abun ¬ dance of threeyearolds of handicap class this year is demonstrated when thirtyone of the eightytwo nominations to the Brooklyn Han ¬ dicap are threeyearolds That gives an idea of where the threeyearolds stand in the racing of 1926 1926The The threeyearolds that were named for the Brooklyn Handicap are Marche Militairc Mosque Nomad Dark Jest Lancaster Naviga ¬ tor Nurmi Suomi Sandstorm High Star Chance Play Salta Celidon Nichavo Siren Remedy Montferrat Rock Man Devonshire Punjab Display Briar Broom Brushaway Croyden Macaw Color Sergeant Acrostic Blondin Rolls Royce Memory Lane Forever and Ever and Espino EspinoThus Thus it will be seen that while there are notable absentees from the list it is a particu ¬ larly heavy one considering the number of nominations that were received Bob Odoms Light View beat Cartoonist with such ease on Friday that he takes new rank among the threeyearolds Light View had raced at Jamaica where under equal weights he beat as fast a horse as Noon Fire Then he moved over to Bslmont Park where he fin ¬ ished a bad last in a threequarters dash over the Widener Course the race going to Chance Play In that race when he was so soundly beaten Odom considered he had a royal chance to win and no one was more surprised at the result of the race Then Light View came out on Friday to gallop home over the mile of the main course These three races would tend to show that Light View is one more horse that does not run well over the Widener Course That is the only conclusion that can be reached for Odom knew he was sending a good horse to the post last Monday when he was soundly beaten beatenThis This performance is along the same lines as the races of Silver Fox the Rancocas Stables fouryearold He failed utterly in the run ¬ ning of the Toboggan Handicap then cam back to the main course to run a brilliant race then returned to the Widener Course to again be badly beaten Haste after disap ¬ pointing in the Toboggan Handicap though he had worked exceedingly well for the race was brought to the main course to win the Withers Stakes Thus it would appear that the Wid Iener Course is much more of a handicap to some horses than others For that reason good horees may readily be beaten by inferior ones when running over this course It will not ds to condemn any horse for a bad showing over the Widener Course taking a line through these three and it would be well to wait until a horse has established a Widener Course rep ¬ utation before expecting too much of him over that course courseAll All of this comes a little late with the Bel ¬ mont Park meeting over but it is advice that is offered for the fall racing at the big Nassau County course courseFor For the twenty days of racing at Aqueduct there are fifteen steeplechases provided for in the book of the meeting This will afford the crosscountry stables adequate opportunity and at this time it is promised that the races through the field will be attractive attractiveThe The meeting of the Queens County Jockey Club offers the crosscountry division the last opportunity until the August racing at Sara ¬ toga comes and doubtless full advantage will be taken of the Aqueduct chances It is pos ¬ sible for these jumpers to rest for the twenty days of the meeting of the Empire City Racing Association and that will be sufficient to fresh ¬ en them up for the Saratoga racing racingMuch Much has been done to restore steeplechasing to a more prominent place in the turf scheme and the racing at Belmont Park gives promise that the jumpers will go through the year offering better entertainment than has been enjoyed for many a year Racing returned to Ohio with the opening of the Akron course Saturday and it is pro ¬ posed to conduct a nineteen days meeting at that course The book for the meeting is an entertaining one and there are an abudance of horses on hand for the meeting as was evi ¬ denced by the entries that were received for the opening day dayWith With the coming in of Akron on Saturday it gave racing at nine different tracks in the country to say nothing of the little circuit in northwest Canada The turf has extended marvelously and re portsjfrom every section prove it is constantly growing in public favor I
