CRUSADER VICTORIOUS IN RICH BELMONT STAKES Captures Notable Race Decided in a Heavy Rain and Before Large Crowd Espino Finishes Second in Sensational Closing ClosingRush Rush Third Place to Haste Chance Shot ShotAccounts Accounts for National Stallion Stakes BELMONT PARK June 12 Crusader the magnificent son of Man o War and Star Fancy was winner of the Belmont Stakes for Samuel D Riddles Glen Riddle Farm Stable through a rain storm at Belmont Park this afternoon This added 48050 to his cash winnings and it gave Mr Riddle a 500 piece of plate for his trophy room But the Riddle luck played an important part when William Ziegler Jrs Espino after being almost left at the post was only a length back of Crusader at the end and four lengths still further away came Joseph E Wideners Withers winner Haste HasteThe The companion feature to the mile and a half of the Belmont was the National Stallion Stake for twoyearolds and it brought a Widener victory when Chance 5 Shot broke the fiveeighths record for the Widener Course to be home the winner winnerSeldom Seldom had there been a bigger crowd at Belmont than the holiday gathering that was out for the running of the old feature The forenoon threatened rain but the downpour did not come until after the big crowd had arrived Then for the rest of the day weather conditions were miserable but the entertainment made one forget all about the weather discomfort discomfortMARRED MARRED BY POOR START STARTIt It is truly unfortunate that the victory of Crusader in the Belmont was not a more clear cut one and that can be attributed solely to the start when Espino which raced second in a magnificent performance and Ropk Star from the Brookmeade Stable were practically left at the post The result was that a great majority of these who watched the running were of opinion that with equal luck at the start Espino would surely have been winner instead of being beaten by a length by Crusader As for Rock Star Fator raced him up for a time after his bad start but he did not perservere with the son of Trap Rock and he finished far back in his company companyNavigator Navigator was an eleventh hour with ¬ drawal anfl it left nine to start As was to be expected Display on the inner rail caused no end of trouble and when the barrier was finally sprung Espino was in the hands of ji trackman and Rock Star had no chance The last named wheeled slightly and the pair of them were far out of it when straight ¬ ened away awayRockman Rockman lost no time in going to tho front and Sande raced Haste along side of him They were both under stiff restraint and Banton was third showing the way to Macaw Crusader was alongside the Whitney colt rounding the first turn and then camo Mars Espino Display and Rock Star in the order named namedEarly Early in the run through the back stretch Banton had enough and as he dropped back Macaw moved into third place behind Rock ¬ man and Haste which still continued to show the way Mars and Display had both headed Crusader but Johnson had the Suburban winner down on the inner rail and was riding a patient race It was not until after leaving the back stretcliithat Rockman showed signs of tiring and there Sande permitted Haste to take the command Crusader by that time was in striking distance and galloping freely and Espino was still lengths away from the pace Swinging for home Sande nursed Haste along cleverly but an eighth out Crusadei4 charged on him and as he drew alongside it was apparent that he had the Widener colt beaten Then on the outside Espino was seen making his remarkable run runRight Right to the end Espino continued to gain but Crusader had too much the best of it and was safely home winner by a length Pour lengths back of Espino came the tired Haste and he had beaten Display winner of tho lengthsChance Preakness by two lengths Chance Shot the twoyearold son of Fair Play and Quelle Chance and a brother to Chance Play took a long step towards tho juvenile champinoship when he was winner of the National Stallion Stakes worth 13095 to the winner And that is not all Under his scale weight he raced the five eighths through the Widener Course In 585 which clipped the track record mado by Wichmount in the opening race raceChance Chance Shot races for Joseph E Widener and his only start was in the Juvenile Stakes in which he was soundly beaten He gave a sterling exhibition today when he led home Harry Payne Whitneys good filly Pantella with W R Coes Donnez Mol Continued on twentieth paeeJ CRUSADER VICTORIOUS Continued from first page third and Cifford A Cochrans Draconis winner of the Juvenile Stakes fourth fourthIt It was Pantella that cut out all the run ¬ ning and St Joseph and Donnez Moi were in forward positions while Draconis was not far away Chance Play was outrun in the early racing hut Sande had him in a good position in the middle of the course and he was striding freely Pantella was going so well that she looked all over the winner until inside the final eighth There SL Joseph was heing held safe and Donnez Moi was not threatening Cut in that last eighth Sande roused the son of Fair Play and he came with his magnificent winning rush that carried him on hy Pantella to see him winner hy a length Pantella was three lengths hefore Donriez Moi and Dra ¬ conis was five lengths further away awayThe The breeding awards in the National Stal ¬ lion Stakes gives the Nursery Stud breeder of the winner 2490 Mr Whitney received an additional 1GGO for having bred Pan ¬ tella and Brownell Combs the breeder of Donnez Moi receives SoO SoOThe The seveneighths handicap that was the fourth offering under ordinary conditions would have been a feature race but with so many good things for the holiday pro ¬ gram it was only a part of the setting for the features It brought about a great con ¬ test when J K Griffiths Canter was just Karm Stables Taps and two lengths further back George D Wideners Hardwood saved third
