ROYAL JULIAN VICTOR Whitehouse Colt Proves Much the Best in Main Attraction Jockey Watson Suffers Broken Wrist in Accident at Churchill Downs Trackr Muddy LOUISVILLE Ky May 18 W H White houses Royal Julian which raced impres ¬ sively in the Kentucky Derby came right bade with a sparkling performance to score his first victory of the year when he won the mile purse named for the Market Street Merchants Association and feature of the program at Churchill Downs today 1 Royal Julian was held in high regard and raced as if much the best of the four others which started He was allowed to race close to the leaders but was kept under restraint and yhen Minervus began to tire he readily raced up on even terms and after a brief struggle drew away decisively Minervus held Barabbas safe for second place placeThe The Idle Hour Stock Farm representative was a factor in the early stages keeping pace with Minervus but it was an exhausting ef ¬ fort on his part and Graver did not aid him much by keeping him at his best pace in an effort to pass Minervus He tired fast in the stretch but was much better than the others The Market Street merchants presented the winner with an ornate cup and also gave jockey W Garner a handsome watch fob and belt buckle buckleATTENDANCE ATTENDANCE SMALL SMALLA A terrific downpour this morning which continuing until noon was responsible for a falling off in the usual attendance noted at the course The track favored horses proficient in the mud but the sport did not suffer to any appreciable extent for the contests were keen and several of the finishes struck the heels of one of the leaders Misnomer and Kieth ridden respectively by E Legere and W Watson were far back at the time but were unable to avoid the prostrate horse and piled over him When the horses and jockeys were untangled E Legere and F Chiavetta arose somewhat shaken but otherwise un ¬ injured but Watson was unconscious and when examined at the emergency hospital where he was speedily rushed by the track ambulance he was found to have a broken wrist and minor bruises Chatson a wellbacked one was winner ot the race after a spirited drive from Charles Robinson another that had managed to es ¬ cape interference and had raced prominent ¬ ly all the way Sea Sag coming with a rush landed in third place placeHEPUULIC HEPUULIC KElEATS KElEATSThe The Cherokee Purse at fiveeights for some of the better grade twoyearolds re ¬ sulted in a close finish when Republic a winner in his only previous race made it two consecutive victories when he defeated Da Vinci Less K three lengths in front of Da Vinci the latter bare ¬ ly outstaying Less 1C for second place Da Vinci was a forward factor through ¬ out and held on gamely when Less K Kwhich which raced wide all the way challenged in the final eighth The latter raced coupled with Fireproof The winner was the pub ¬ lic choice Agnes Call grouped in the mutuel field was triumphant in a stirring finish that marked the opening race at six and a half furlongs The successful mare a representa ¬ tive of Ilarhed Brothers local owners after racing forwanlly in the early stages raced up to the leading Capistrano in finished with the most speed and but for her being taken back after five eighths might have been a strong factor Clover Club well backed tired badly fol ¬ lowing close behind the leaders for three quarters The ever disappointing Brown Silk followed the others for threequarters and when she failed to respond to hard urging was eased up in the last quarter quarterThe The veteran campaigner
