MARY JANE QUALIFIES Daughter of Pennant Defeats Crack Fillies at Louisville Race Marred by Accident in inWhich Which Candy Queen Falls FallsWith With Mack Garner LOUISVILLE Ky May 26 Mary Jane the stalwart daughter of Pennant Bourbon Lass which races so well for A B Gallaher and S S Combs further endeared herself to many of her admirers this afternoon and qualified handsomely for Mondays renewal of the Kentucky Oaks when she accounted for the feature race at Churchill Downs E P Waggoners Yeddo a daughter of Man o War finished in second place with W N Kings Acirema third and Fair Star star of the stable of William DuPont Jr and lead ¬ ing money winning twoyearold of 102G was fourth in the field of eight eightThe The race named in honor of the National Leather and Shoe Finders Association now in national convention here was scheduled as a preliminary for the fillies expected to start Monday in the Kentucky Oaks The race was marred by an accident in which jockey Mack Garner luckily escaped serious injury His mount Candy Queen regarded as one of the leaders of her age and sex and well backed in the race struck the heels of Preference leaving the back stretch lost her footing and went down in violent fashion fashionGARNERS GARNERS LUCKY ESCAPE ESCAPEUpon Upon removal to the track emergency hos ¬ pital Garners injuries were found to be of minor character bruises about his right should being the most painful The skull cap which Garner wore in the race was picked up on the track in almost two parts and Garner attributed his escape to the pro ¬ tection the cap afforded in his hard fall He however cancelled his other mounts for the afternoon afternoonMary Mary Janes victory was well earned and D Connelly who was astride her rede one of the best races of his career in riding his mount through a narrow opening on the inside insideThis This saved many lengths for the winner and put her close up on the leading Yeddo which she easily disposed of after reaching the stretch where Connelly again sent the winner through next to the rail She got to the finish with a length and a half to spare over Yeddo which gamely stalled off Acirema in the final eighth Fair Star was galloped out an additional furlong covering the nine furlongs in 1 54 Mary Jane ran the mile in 1 39 and was in receipt of five pounds from Fair Star StarCandy Candy Queen was in a peimaneiil hut tight place when she fell and appeared well on her way to race to her recent fine trials She was not seriously hurt in the fall and there is a chance that she may be an Oaks starter starterSea Sea Drift showing improvement was re ¬ turned an easy winner in the opening race over the one mile and a sixteenth course Well ridden by Earl Pool she drew away from the others when ready after three quarters and the finish found her with a margin of six lengths over Belle of Win ¬ chester which downed Watch It by a length for second place Black Grackle came to grief soon after the start when her band ¬ ies came loose and gave her much trouble throughout the race Despite this handi ¬ cap she ran well wellCHICAGO CHICAGO OWNER AGAIN AGAINFor For the second consecutive day the winner of the daily race for maiden juveniles was furnished by J J Coughlin the Chicago sportsman who has one of the largest stables on the grounds His colors were car ¬ ried to victory by La Dentelle which led for the entire distance in the second race to win by one length from Moody Mary who outstayed Pink Lily by a neck for second place The latter filly was closely pressed by Clutter which ran a remarkable race after getting away poorly poorlyIsostasy Isostasy a pronounced choice was re ¬ turned an easy winner over three other two yearolds in the fourth race The quartet made up the smallest field of the afternoon and the winners triumph was scored with ¬ out trouble as he led Chatson by five lengths at the end In the first eighth the winner was forced back when Everlasting and Fer seth outran him to the first turn but an eighth closer to the finish found him rapidly gaining on the leaders and nothing more than a canter was required to hold his rivals safe after he took command in the stretch stretchPiccadilly Piccadilly furnished a surprise for many when he took the lead in the first few strides and carried on in advance of the five three yearolds that opposed him in the third race Piccadilly heretofore had been regarded as a sprinter but his game finish completely shattered this belief Nicely ridden by W Garner he was not fully spent to reach the finish a good half length clear of Speedome ¬ ter which beat Twinkling by a length for second place
