PAYNE WHITNEY FUNERAL Last Rites for Noted New York YorkSportsman Sportsman to Be Held HeldFriday Friday Noon NEW YORK N Y May 26 The funeral of Payne Whitney who died suddenly yester ¬ day at Greentree his Long Island estate will be held Friday at 12 oclock noon The services will be conducted in Christ Church Manhasset L I Although the announcements state that the interment will be private it was said at the office of Harry Payne Whitney brother of the dead sportsman that friends may attend the funeral funeralPayne Payne Whitney passed away when his interest in racing and breeding was at its highest It is less than a year ago that he bought that portion of the John Hughes Farm on the Paris Pike near Lexington Ky adjoining the breeding establishment of his brother where many of the great horses that have raced in the light blue and brown colors were foaled The property is across the pike from the Elmendorf Stud of Joseph E Widener president of the Westchester Rac ¬ ing Association and the friend and close associate of the late sportsman sportsmanThe The fine old house on the Payne Whitney property was overhauled recently and Mr and Mrs Whitney had planned to spend much of their time there with the horses which prior to the purchase of the farm had been quartered at the Whitney Stud as the establishment of Harry Payne Whitney is known It was the intention of Payne Whitney to have Major Louis A Beard manager of the Whitney Stud exercise gen ¬ eral supervision over his blood stock breed ¬ ing operations also The hope is entertained that Mrs AVhitney and her son John Hay Whitney will continue to breed the horses horsesExpressions Expressions of sorrow at the death of Payne Whitney were heard on all sides at Belmont Park today They came from in ¬ dividuals in every branch of racing activity as well as those interested in the sport merely as spectators who knew Mr Whitney as a splendid type of sportsman sportsmanFrank Frank Ki Sturgis chairman of The Jockey Club said of the grief of himself and his asso ¬ ciates at the turfs great loss A beautiful and courageous nature gifted with great ability farsighted judgment and distinct vision has been called away from a life of great usefulness usefulnessHonored Honored and beloved not only by his immediate circle but by the community at large and peculiarly by those to whom his great benefactions and silent generosity has been extended it is unfortunate indeed that one interested in philanthropy art and sport and in activities of all kinds has been called away from his sphere of usefulness at so early an age agePayne Payne Whitneys death is a great calamity and his passing leaves a vacancy hard to fill fillThe The board of stewards of The Jockey Club will meet tomorrow after the funeral and adopt formal resolutions in Mr Whit ¬ neys memory
