Houston racing under the silks of Eben E Byers sent to the post by Max Hirsch and ridden by little Fewell was winner of todays stake offering at Belmont Park when he won the Hollis a claiming stake worth 53473 to the winner It was a close finish with P S Randolphs Lanyard only a head back and Samuel D Riddles Pygmalion saving third place without trouble from J J Timmermans Fine Manners MannersThere There was a break in the weather and conditions were excellent for the sport though the recent rains made the going Jieavy A goodly crowd was out and ex ¬ cellent sport resulted resultedEght Eght went to the post for the Hollis Stakjs a threequartermile contest and on Ihs way to the barrier Casting the A C Bostwick hope ran off with George Fields and before he was controlled he had cov ¬ ered fiveeighths at better than half speed speedThe The start was a goou one and Pygmalion racd into command with Houston close after him The pair closely lapped were soon four lengths before the others and House Boy the W R Coe starter was in third place before Maelstrom and Lanyard Heupel had Fine Manners on the inside and not in the best of positions positionsThere There was little change in these positions until the stretch was reached Houston hung on behind Pygmalion until finally he made the son of Leonardo II tire but by that time he was tiring himself and it was only under a drive that he withstood the final rush of Lanyard Fine Manners was miserably rid ¬ den throughout and after holding to the rail position almost to the stretch Heupel elected to go to the outside in the run home and the colt made up considerable ground on his own courage courageTESTER TESTER DISAPPOINTS DISAPPOINTSOld Old Tester was a disappointment and showing no speed at any stage of the race he was far back throughout throughoutThere There was an excellent finish came out of the short course steeplechase when Joseph E Wideners Lighthouse under a masterly ride by Dolly Byers was just up to beat Mrs V Carlrons Perkiomen with J McE Bowmans Joyon a close third The only other starters were Bethany and Marshall Fields Nomad NomadAt At the first jump Nomad made a bad land ¬ ing and from that mistake he trailed far back in his company all the way Bethany was taken out into a good lead by C Smoot and once clear of the others she was rated along at a smart pace She made a bad landing over the water jump but recovered without losing much ground Joyon and Perkiomen alternated in second place back of the leader while Byers saving ground all the way followed with Lighthouse under a nice restraint The big fellow was gallop ¬ ing strongly and Byers was content to bide his time timeIn In the back field there was a general closing up on Bethany and Perkiomen and Joyon both soon had her headed Then it was that Peikiomen went into command and W Hunt sent him along until he looked all over the winner but Byers had begun to move up with Lighthouse and once over the fence at the top of the field he set him down in earnest and moving up with a rush on the inside he was lapped on Perkiomen going to the last fence Perkiomen was first over and Hunt was guilty of riding Byers a bit close in the ride home but Byers under a furious drive worked his way up until in the closing strides Lighthouse was a winner by a head headTHUEE THUEE STARTERS STARTERSOnly Only three met in the mile of the Ben Brush Handicap but it resulted in a first class contest when Frederick Johnsons Bumpkin was just up to beat Jeff Liv ¬ ingstons Son of John with the Glen Riddle Farms filly Corvette a wellbeaten third thirdSon Son of John was the one to show the way to the last few strides Fields permitted him to go into a long early lead where he rated while the other two raced closely lapped back of him Xearing the stretch turn both Bumpkin and Corvette drew up close to the Livingston horse but he was still showing the way as he swung into the stretch There Fields went wide in search of good going and the other two followed him out outAn An eighth from home the real fight was on and the filly was first to weaken As she tired she swerved over to the inside back of the other two and they continued well wide to the end where Bumpkin finally took the measure of Son of John by a half length while Corvette was five lengths further away awayMaiden Maiden juveniles were called together in the opening four and a half furlongs dash and it resulted in a victory for Mrs R P Shafers Star Rocket when he led home Garsons Mi Vida with P H Faulconers Gladys Clark saving third from Philene the Rancccas Stable starter starterNoine Noine was the one to cut out the early running but it did not take Star Rocket long to put him away and once in front the son of Advocate always held the others safe to win with something to spare Mivida finished strongly to be an easy second and the others followed much in parade order Jeff Livingstons High Time juvenile Com ¬ plication was an easy winner of the four and a half furlongs of the fifth race He forced most of the pace and at the end was two lengths clear of John Maddens Paragraph which in turn beat W R Coes Indian Scout by a length for third place while Flitting Day was only beaten a nose for the short end of UH prize The others were more or less strung out with Jilds Kiosk last of all allAt At the end of the program in a mile racp for platers the Sagamore Stables Abul Fath after unseating Fields jumping a fence and galloping off to his stable was returned to the post and won W S Kilmers Allfeyj gave him some contention and Don Bonero after setting the early pace finished third
