MUDDY AT LOUISVILLE Downs Racing Conducted Under Adverse Conditions Intermittent Showers During Day Serve to Keep Attendance Below Normal LOUISVILLE Ky May 31 Today the next to final day of the twentytwoday spring meeting at Churchill Downs found the sport at the famed course conducted under adverse conditions Heavy rains dur ¬ ing the night which left a muddy track for for the ad ¬ today was largely responsible verse conditions under which the racing was conducted The going was the most exact ¬ ing that has prevailed during the meeting and was such as to afford the more stal wart horses a decided advantage Although the sun broke through the clouds during the day intermittent showers were the order and a barrier against the appear ¬ ance of a large crowd crowdAdditional Additional features to the sport was the riding of the veterans D Connelly and Wil ¬ liam Crump the former piloting three of the first five winners and Crump guiding the remaining two Crumps second success was scored with the running of the feature the Strand Purse a dash of seveneighths for six of the better grade threeyearolds and over The Shoestring Stables Comrade was the horse on which Crump scored his sec ¬ ond victory the Upset threeyearold taking the lead after threeeighths and leading Parco to the finish by two lengths The lat ¬ ter was ridden by Connelly and barely out ¬ stayed Mally Jane by a nose for second place the latter finishing with fine speed in the last sixteenth after appearing beaten beatenOPEXER OPEXER TO NICHELSON NICHELSONNichelson Nichelson accorded confident backing and well ridden by Danny Connelly was the win ¬ ner of the opening race which brought out fourteen of the cheaper grade platers The winner was forced to race from behind his opponents as a result of his slow beginning and his response to his riders urge in the stretch permitted him to wear down Dingo after the latter had raced into what appeared an almost safe lead Valley Light which raced with the leaders for the first five eighths just lasted to outstay Watch It for third place placeAVilliam AVilliam T showing a decided penchant for the muddy going outsprinted seven other twolearolds almost the full fiveeighths of the second race His success gave Connelly his second winner and he beat Ginestra al ¬ most two lengths Ginestra finished gamely and was slowly making his way to the win ¬ ner Kitty Yansen being hard urged in the first threeeighths during which she found difficulty in keeping in a forward position began tiring after entering the stretch but hung on long enough to win third honors honorsMusician Musician from the Kenton Farm Stable and W Crump made up the successful pair in the third race Musician raced into a prominent position after threeeighths and after bearing out at the stretch turn easily disposed of the tiring Accumulator in the last eighth Accumulator raced into the lead by saving ground on the turns but began to tire after threequarters Pretty Run a member of the mutuel field surprised by accounting for third place a belated rush gaining him the placing placingTHIRD THIRD FOR CONNELLY CONNELLYConnellys Connellys third winning mount came with the running of the Silver Hills Purse which brought out five of the better grade two yearold fillies and resulted in an easy win for the promising Miss Lee She outran the others for fiveeighths and reached the finish easily with three lengths to spare over Miss Fire which had raced in closest pursuit of the winner throughout The latter swerved in sharply when tiring in the last eighth and slightly impeded Aleader which was making a bid for second place at the time J Smith was endeavoring to get Aleader through on the inside and was forced to ease his mount up when Miss Fire bore over Quicken and Turn On completed the field fieldThe The sixth race resulted in a win for Sola Mia from the Parkview Stable After tak ¬ ing a long lead in the first threeeighths T Maguire took the winner under stout re ¬ straint while doing the last two turns and when straightened out for the stretch drive she easily held Peggy Bledsoe safe the only one of the winners opponents to offer any serious contention Black Crackle which finished in third place was six lengths in the rear of Peggy Bledsoe The race was for fillies and mares from among the older division Why Worry and Raving Lady became entangled when the former bolted at the first turn thus ruining the chances of both
