OPPORTUNITY FOR STAYERS Five Thorncliffe Races Cater to LongDistance Runners inferno Handicap Results In Close Finish FinishAVIth AVIth Cloth Hall the Winner Fire Rock RockVictorious Victorious In Fifth Race TORONTO Ont May 31 Races over a distance of ground were features at Thorn ¬ cliffe Park today Five of the seven races called for a journey of one mile or over in which wellmatched fields went to the post Interesting contests were in order and stir ¬ ring finishes resulted at the end qf a ma ¬ jority of them The conditions of two of the races the third and fourth called for horses foaled in Canada In both of these races the winners Royal Pearl and Cloth Hall got up in the final strides to win by the smallest of margins As a matter of fact the result of both of these races were in doubt until the official placing was displayed displayedInterest Interest in the days sport centered in the running of the Inferno Handicap This was a dash of one mile and was run as the fourth race There were only five starters but all of them had some backing T Wilson had the mount on Cloth Hall When the start came he was off slowly and rounding the first turn was far back When he made his move at the turn out of the back stretch he elected to take the outside route and rounding the far turn went wide and lost much ground At the head of the stretch Cloth Hall and Attack staged a great duel between them Mooney was riding in des ¬ perate fashion and managed to keep Attacks head in front almost to the very last stride but Cloth Hall was not to be downed Ten lengths back of Attack came Thorndykc Tricky Take Off and Gems to Let the pace ¬ makers for threequarters threequartersUNDER UNDER TERRIFIC DRIVE DRIVEInquisitor Inquisitor installed a lukewarm favorite for the initial race a fiveeighths dash for juveniles made good when he withstood a terrific drive under the guidance of jockey F Horn to be returned the winner by a neck Black Friar second in esteem with the play ¬ ers raced to second place and the badly rid ¬ den Reigh Olga accounted for the minor end of the purse The latter was away slowly while the first two went away with the first flight Mann on Reigh Olga made excessive use of his mount in attempting to make up his lost ground too quickly and after gaining a brief lead at the eighth post Reigh Olga tired and inquisitor having something left to meet the challenge regained command to stave off Black Friar which raced wide most of the journey journeyFourteen Fourteen platers of the cheaper grade pa ¬ raded for the threequarters of the second race and an interesting contest came about with the running and for which Brotherhood a first time starter on Canadian soil made good in a stubborn drive to get a neck de ¬ cision over Ropes End Dorchester another making his first appearance finished third thirdIMPROVED IMPROVED ROYAL PEARL PEARLThe The third race for Provincebreds to travel over the mile and seventy yards route re ¬ sulted in an upset when Royal Pearl ne ¬ glected in the wagering and showing good improvement over her recent starts finished with belated speed to overtake Sphericity the early leader to score by a nose The latter showed good speed and raced in the van of her opponents from the rise of the barrier only to weaken in the face of vic ¬ tory and relinquish the lead in the final few strides Ifs and Ands the choice and wretchedly handled by the inexperienced W Brierly gave a good account of herself and with better riding she surely would have been a more keen contender if not the win ¬ ner nerThe The fifth race for platers at one and a sixteenth miles brought about another close finish in which Fire Rock emerged victorous after a long drive from Alletache with North Breeze taking the short end of the purse beaten just a little more than a length The favorite King ONeill II was unplaced al ¬ though he had every opportunity to make good He failed dismally when the finish came and at the end was only leading one horse in the field of seven Graylings Lady and Solo after they had both enjoyed a long lead were unable to keep pace when pressed pressedJ J A Parsons was a visitor and an ¬ nounced that he would send his horses right through to Ottawa to participate in the meet ¬ ing at Connaught Park
