At Bowie One Best Bet — WELLE T — In the Fifth Race. ; I t ! i ■ i The Maryland racing season will be ! ushered in at the new Bowie track today | and the management has offered to its patrons a splendid program. The sixth run- ning of the Inaugural Handicap will be the f feature tver.t of the day, with the Promenade i Turse and the Twin Cities Purse serving , as added attractions. Twenty-five horses from the handicap division have been entered J for the Inaugural Handicap, which calls for a contest over the seven-eighths of a mile J distance. A hard fought contest is looked 1 for with su_-h gcod ones as Jack Higgins, 1 Reminder, Ntvigator, Aucilla and Black l-riar ameng de contestants. The Promenade Purse, which will be run as the third race, is turned over to the ! three-year-old"?. Fifteen are entered and they ■rill be asked to show their wares over the three-quarters distance, under allowance conditions. The Twin Cities Purs-e calls for a contest over the one mile and seventy yards and it engages a band of horses from the older division to make up the field. 0 SELECTIONS IN FIRST RACE. Only two of the starters in the first have 1 been seen under colors and for this reason 1 we will not try to pick the winner of this I contest. MALLY JANE— GRACIOUS GIFT-KNOCK A NY. A large field will meet in the second race ; to try conclusions over the three-quarters distance. For the winner we are selecting the i good mare MALLY JANE. She has been turning in some fast morning trials and we think she is about ready for a winning race at the first asking. We look for her to give a good account of herself if she gets away with the leaders in this large field. GRACIOUS GIFT showed he likes the Bowie track, for in his three starts here last fall he won twice and finished third in the other. On those races alone he figures to be a strong contender here. KNOCKANY is asked to shoulder top weight but even with this heavy impost has to be given a good chance for some part of the purse. ROSIN ANTE— SPORT HALLAHAN— REPROYE. The Promenade Purse, the third race on the card, calls for a dash over the five and one-half furlcngs and it engages a band of three-year-olds to race under allowance conditions. The Greentree Stable may have the winner in ROSINANTE. This son of Leonardo II. raced well during the winter months, and on the form he showed in his races at the Fair Grounds has to be given the call for the winners share of the purse. SPORT HALLAHAN may be the one to make ROSI-XA.VTE turn in one of his best races. He is getting in with a light impost and this should help him in proving a contender. REPROVE has been training well and figures possibly the best of the rest of the field for the short end of the purse on her morning workouts. REMINDER— NAVIGATOR-INDIAN LOYE ALL. The Inaugural Handicap, the opening days ! | f i , J J 1 1 ! 1 1 I ; i feature event, has attracted twenty-five of the best horses from the handicap division in training here. H. P. Whitney will make a strong bid for top honors with his crack racer REMINDER. The son of Chicle has wintered well and the dockers say he is ready. Should he get away with the leaders he will make them step to take his measure. NAVIGATOR will be asked to share top weight with AUCILLA, but we doubt if this will stop him, for he has demonstrated he can carry weight and still race with the best of them. He has been racing during the winter and this also is to his advantage over some of the other starters. INDIAN LOVE CALL, on his workouts, has to be considered a contender for the short end of the purse. JACK HIGGINS will have to be given consideration on his Louisiana Derby-win. AUCILLA, if ready, is another which will respect attention. WELLET— PORTO BELLO GOLD— ATHEL. The fifth race, named the Twin Cities Purse, brings to the post an evenly matched band of older horses to race over the one mile and seventy yards distance. WELLET may be the one to lead the field home. He is in his best form and needs but to turn in one. of his best races to be able to be home the winner. The advantage of a winter campaign should tell here. PORTO BELLO GOLD figures to be a contender for. taking a line on his workouts, he seems to be in fine racing trim. ATHEL is another which has been training well, but we doubt if he will be ready for a winning effort at the first asking. He may be able to fill the three-hole, however, should he race back to his morning trials. REJUVENATION— PRICE MAN-KING SOLOMONS SEAL. The smallest field of the day will hook up in the sixth race. REJUVENATION stacks up as the likely winner. He raced -well during the winter months and, as he is a seasoned campaigner, seems to hold a slight edge over the ones that will be making their first start of the year. PRICEMAN raced to good advantage over the Maryland tracks last year and we look for him to prove a strong contender here, should he be ready for one of his best races. KING SOLOMONS SEAL, on his Havana races, figures to have a good chance for sone part of the purse. SPUGS— EMINENT— WORMWOLD. For the winner of the last race we are taking the old gelding SPUGS. He likes the Bowie track, for some of his best races were over this course. He seems to be ready for one of his best races and, as the distance is to his liking, we look for him to prove the winner. EMINENT, though unable to win a race in his four starts at Jefferson Park, finished close up in all of them. He should be among the place horses here, should he get away with the leaders. WORMWOLD had a hard campaign over the Havana track. On his races there, he has to be given a good chance to finish among the pay-off horses.
