MISSTEPS DERBY WORKOUT . « Le Mar Stock Farms Colt Runs Three -Quarters in 1:18%. + .olden Racket and tartago Given Slow Canter Over One Mile — Oh Say Attracts Attention. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 4 —The Le Mar Stock Farms rugged colt Misstep supplied the outstanding Derby workout at Churchill Downs this morning when, with Joe Peters aboard, he galloped tliree-cjuarters in 1 :18%, and eased up the seven-eighths in 1 :35. He was accompanied in his work by Mop Up and the five-year-old Profiteer. The trio began at the three-quarters post and worked to the stand. Misstep went to the front without delay and. under restraint, outran his stablemates to the end. He went the quarter in :26V5, half in :51% and five-eighths in 1 :04. The colt raced most impressively and accomplished his task in a most satisfactory manner. This was the only Derby trial of any moment, training operations in the Derby line being at a low ebb. The track at Churchill Downs militated somewhat against pretentious gallops, due to the fact that it was deep and dusty. A strong wind that blew over the course was also a contributory factor in discouraging ambitious moves. There was no let up, however, in the work of the preparation of the Derby aspirants, as all of the number were given long limbering-up gallops or short spins down the track stretch. Golden Racket and Cartago, in the stable of Jack Flanigan, went out together and galloped a slow mile in 1 :52i4. while Nick Cullop was breezed five-eighths in creditable time. Heigh Count, Sea Rip and Reigh Olga cantered around the course a couple of times. All of the Derby eligibles are doing fa- mously in their preparation, and this applies more particularly to Misstep, which is showing steady improvement, under the skillful handling of Mose Lowenstein. Since coming here this colts Derby stock has gone up considerably, and those horsemen who at first were inclined to belittle his chances are now ready to admit their mistake in under-rating j his ability. Of all the Derby colts in local training, Misstep is now regarded as Reigh Counts most formidable rival. The colt has done everything asked of him, and already is in fine fettle for the contest. At Douglas Park, Oh Say is absorbing a monopoly of the attention of the work Watchers, and this colt is thoroughly fit, and will be when Alex Gordon ships him to the East about April 15. The performances of the J. J. Coughlin eligibles are also meritorious. The work of Wacker Drive, D. F. Kelly and Two Dans has been so uniformly good that trainer Miller cannot make up his mind which one he will select to carry the stables banner in the big race. * ,
