SURPRISES AT BOWIE » Contemplate Furnishes Outstanding Upset in Feature Race. — ; » _ Defeats Poly and Senator Norris in Flash Handicap — Rock Thorn Wins the Second Race. BOWIE, Md., April 4. — For the second day of the Bowie meeting there came one of the most delightful of warm spring days and another big crowd was on hand for the sport. The track was at its best and, while platers furnished most of the entertainment, there was plenty of interest. G. W. Foremans Contemplate won the feature race of the afternoon and, incidentally, furnished the big surprise of the day when he was winner of the Flash Handicap. This was a five and a half furlongs dash and he readily led horn J. P. McGoverns Poly, generally considered as a sure winner. Third place went to H. G. Badwells Senator Norris, and Lieutenant II. was fourth. Senator Norris played an important part in the defeat of Poly. The McGovern colt was rushed out to set the pace from the rise of the barrier, but Senator Norris hung to him closely and the pair of them drew away into a good lead. Contemplate was outrunning the others and. though well back of the first two, was galloping strongly, with the others following him but making up no ground. Poly shook off Senator Norris before the stretch was reached, but he had hung to him long enough to cost the son of Polymelia n a considerable effort. Then, when Contemplate finished with a rush, Poly did not have enough left to stand him off, with the result that he was beaten an eighth from home, and contemplate scored by four lengths. FINISHES FAST. Senator Norris was coming again at the end and he was well lapped on Poly and just a head before Lieutenant II., which was rushed up on the outside when too late. The Bat bore out going to the stretch turn and was soundly beaten, eight lent ths back of the first four. The Nevada Stock Farm Stable has a clean score in the two juvenile races of the meeting. On opening day Preston Burch sent Voltear and Violado to the post and they finished first and second. This afternoon he saddled Rapid Transit, one which had raced at Tijuana, and he was returned the winner, establishing a new track record of :47 for the half mile. Samuel Ross Rhapsody Ann was second, with Walter J. Salmons Glacial saving third from the Greentree Stables Sport. The start was just a bit ragged, owing to the greenness of the horses, but they were all away in motion, though Lew Black, the H. P. Whitney starter, was almost at once crowded back rather badly. Recognition, from the stable of G. D. Wide-ner, showing a great burst of speed, quickly drew away into a long lead and, to the head of the stretch, he looked a sure winner, but there he had enough, and. as he tired. Rapid Transit slipped through to come on and win going away. Rhapsody Ann had been fairly close to the leaders throughout to save second place, while Glacial was gaining fast on the outside to be third. Sport, a Greentree Stable starter, also beat home the tired Recognition. He tired so badly in the last eighth, however, that it was a tight fit. WINS BY A NOSF. There was a good finish came out of the six and a half furlongs dash that was the second race when C. L. Whitings Rock Thorn •just nosed out Mrs. H. Lockwoods Commissioner Cahill, and a length and a half farther back J. J. Conners Casting beat Frances Rock for third place. Commissioner Cahill was the one to force all the pace, jockey Robertson rating him along smoothly in the van without drawing away from the others. At the head of the stretch he went wide, and it was there that Rock Thorn slipped through on the inside to nose him out in a furious drive. Son Ami was the disappointment of the race. He finished far back of the field. Maiden three-year-olds, to race three-quarters of a mile, was the third offering and Walter J. Salmons Balai dOr proved winner when he led home C. F. Smithsona Mollie Elizabeth by a narrow margin, with Junie racing third and H. P. Whitneys Sage-boys closing a big gap to finish fourth. As the race was run, Sageboys was much the best, but jockey Workman was unable to rouse him in the early stages and then had to come around horses at the head of the stretch. Through the last eighth he was running fast, but the move came too late. F. H. Smiths Prickly Heat had to be much the best to be winner of the mile and a sixteenth Prospect Purse. He met with much intereference, was forced to race on the outside in the stretch and got up to outstay William Mahers Fly Hawk and be winner by half a length. Eight lengths back of them C. C. Halls Nat Evens saved third place from H. G. Bedwells La Morte. Continued on eighth page. SURPRISES AT BOWIE I I Continued from first page. La Morte was the one to set the pace from 1 the rise of the barrier, while Fly Hawk was 1 slow to be und r way and Burke took him a 1 bit wide on the first turn. Nat Evens and 1 TVickly II. at were going well back of La 1 Morte, While Seths Hope, the other starter, • had scant speed. It was neariag the half-mile post that 1 Burke moved up on the outside with Fly Hawk. He was soon close after the leaders, • with La Morte show ing signs of tiring, though 1 Prickly Ik at v. as hanging on well. Then, as Fly Hawk came alongside Prickly Heat, he swerved in rather badly and Long was forced t take up. This cost much 1 ground and. i:i the meantime. Fly Hawk J went on to put both Xat Evens and La Morte ? away. Then, in the stretch, overcoming the ground I lost by the interference. Prickly Heat came - with his winning rush on the outside to wear down Fly Hawk.
