J 1 . SCORES RUNAWAY VICTORY ♦ Petee -Wrack Accounts for Admiration Purse a* Havre de Grace. » J. R- Macomber Derby Candidate Easily Outruns Brooms and Folamile — Sunsard In Front. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., April 24.— John 11. Macombers Kentucky Derby and Preak-ness Stakes candidate Petee-Wrack, making his first start of the year in the Admiration Purse at Havre de Grace this afternoon, scored a runaway victory. Ridden by G. Fields and setting all of his own pace, Petee-Wraek was winner by a length from the Brookmeade Stables Brooms. Seven lengths back of this pair followed H. T. Archibalds Folamile, and then came John Speed Elliotts Negopoli. There were five starters, Lucie Ann being withdrawn. On the strength of a nine-pound pull in the weights, and good reports of recent workouts, Petee-Wraek wras a well-played favorite. Brooms, however, did not lack for admirers. Folamile was a bit fractious at the post and lashed out with his heels and landed on Brooms quarter. This made the latter a bit nervous, but apparently did not affect his running. When the start came Fields, who had an outside position, rushed Petee-Wrack to the front and, on the first turn, had a slight margin over Folamile, Brooms going wide at this point. In the run down the back stretch Fields took Petee-Wrack under slight restraint. Folamile was on the inside of the leader next to the rail, where the footing was deep. Brooms wa i on the outside of the pair. Considering the going, the pace was fast, the first half mile being run in :49%. On the far turn Brooms moved up with a determined challenge, getting within half a length of the pacemaker at the three-eighths post. straightened out for the final run, Petee-Wrack increased his advantage and at the eighth post was a scant length in front. Brooms was well out in the middle of the track while Petee-Wrack was still on the inside. Brooms was hanging on well and at the sixteenth post Fields became anxious. He went to the whip, striking Petee-Wrack but once. When the latter felt the lash he simply bounded away and Fields again steadied him and held Brooms safe in the last fifty yards. Brooms went farther than the winner. He was on the outside of Petee-Wrack for the entire distance and must have lost at least a couple of lengths at the first and last turns. The mile and seventy yards was run in 1:49 vs. the fractions being :24%, :49%, 1:16?5. 1 Ss. Although beaten. Brooms ran a good race. Both he and Petee-Wrack looked to be in splendid condition and the appearance of both colts was favorably commented upon on their way to the post. Folamile came out of the race in poor condition. He was jumped on by Negopoli during the running. The races were run over a heavy track, but, despite this handicap, favorites scored in a majority of the races. Two sons of Sun Briar, Sunsard and Sun Beau both won and were odds-on choices. A surprise came with the running of the first race when A. P. Canales High Score, the extreme outsider, won in a canter. High Score was ridden by J. Tamaro. made all of the pace and beat J. S. Herkness Chester Continued on sixteenth page. SCORES RUNAWAY VICTORY Continued from first page. by eight lengths. Fatigue was third and then followed the Sagamore Stables Sun Broom. The field left the barrier in u compact bunch with High Score quickest to get going. He was quickly joined by Chester and the pair raced head and head into the home stretch. Then High Score began drawing away and the further they went the bigger gap he opened. Chester took a tiring swerve the last sixteenth and hit the inside fence. It looked as if he might go down, but Shanks held him together. Rocka-phine, shuffled back when the start came, was never prominent. A stirring finish came with the running of the sixth race when Brahman, coming from behind in the stretch, got up in the final strides to beat the tiring Japonica by a neck. Brahman was coupled with Deep Sea as the Itoss-Long entry. Deep Sea was probably best and would have beaten her stable companion but for a rough race. She was in mighty close quarters next to the inner rail in the run down the back stretch and was sharply cut off and knocked out of contention after passing the half mile post. Barnes then took her to the outside. When he found the task a hopeless one he did not punish his mount. Fraulein, which showed early speed, was a tiring third, beaten five lengths for second place. Angry Mood. Verdi and Bookie were withdrawn from the second race, leaving but three to go. It was a good betting affair, with Sunsard a receding favorite. This Sun Briar gelding was making his first effort in the colors of his new owner, J. McGee. A. Robertson had the mount and Sunsard proved an easy winner when he beat Dignus by a couple of lengths. This pair raced in close order from the start into the home stretch, where Sunsard began drawing away. He held the mare safe at all stages, Robertson having him in hand the first half mile. Single Star, the other starter, was never a factor. Static has been added to the schooling list, which brings the total up to nineteen. There are fifty-six horses on the preferred list. Jack Hayes has taken over the books of jockeys J. Chalmers, F. Wciner and G. Schreiner. The apprentice allowance on Parchesie in the seventh race was waived and Eddi© Barnes was given the mount. »
