NOTABLE WORKOUTS ♦ Misstep Shows Spectacular Speed in One Mile Gallop. • Upset Colt Runs Distance in 1:40% — Reigh Count Works One Mile in 1:41%. ♦ LOUISVILLE. Ky., April 2 7.— Speedy work was the watchword in Kentucky Derby training operations at Churchill Downs this morning when a number of the more potential aspirants for Derby honors were given their most ambitious trials of the season. The works ware over a fast ack. which made for speedy trials, but the horses had to face a cold west v.-ind while racing down the home stretch. The weather had a distinctively winter aspect. The interest of the work watchers was divided between the trials of Reigh Count and Misstep, conceded the peers of the local Derby b-igade. Loth of these crack colts were given their best trials of the season to date, and in the fastest time they have recorded so far. From a time standpoint the showing of Misstep was the better, as the son of Upset and St. Theresa hung up a training record for the season by working a m 5 in 1 :40%, a tru.y remarkable showing at this stage of the training season. igh Count negotiated the one mile in 1 :42, which performance, although not as fast as that of the Le Mar Stock Farm Stables crack colt, was nevertheless praiseworthy and demonstrated beyond doubt that the son of Sunreigh and Contessina has reached an advanced stage in his training and is ready to answer thi bugle call. ATTRACTS ATTENTION. The work of Misstep came early in the morning and attracted wide notice. The colt was accompanied by Mop Up, another of the stables Derby eligibles, and the five-year-old Prince Ronald. Jockey Joe Kederis was intrusted with the job of riding Misstep and he was a busy rider indeed, for. in addition to this mount, he worked three other Derby colts during this morning — Bar None, Long-ridge and Whiskarm. This fea has seldom ever been equaled at the local track. D. Dubois had the mount on Mop Up. Misstep and his work companions started at the sixteenth , po.e. with Mop Up and Prince Ronald having a big advantage over Misstep. The trio went along with well-measured strides for the entire distance. At the three-eighths pole Misstep drew up to his opponents and, taking the lead, drew away from the pair [ to finish well in advance. Trainer Arose Low-enstein, , stationed in the center field, waved to Kederis to slow down with Misstep in the final quarter, but the rider failed to discern the trainer and his signals and kept right on and permitted his mount to run with loosened rein right to the end. Misstep was caught in the following fractions: .23M ; :48y5 ; l:14Jb: 1:40%. Mop Up was caught the mile in 1 :413i. Prince Ronald dropped out after traversing three-quarters. MATT Will SPECTATOR. , It was rather late when Reigh Count and . Reigh Olga were brought out and news of the trial brought a big crowd. Colonel Winn 1 and D. E. OSullivan were among the spectators. Chick Lang was astride the Derby favorite, while Larry Mills had the leg up on Reigh Olga. The pair was given a preliminary gallop at three-quarters then broke at the stand with Reigh Olga having the benefit of fully three lengths over his more noted stablemate. The latter was on the [ outside and, entering the back stretch, gained ■ on his opponent and was running well in hand. He raced down the back stretch right t on the flanks of Reigh Olga. This order was maintained for the rest of the distance, with bbth colts being beautifully rated. They ! finished the mile in hand, with Reigh Olga a neck to the fore. Both were galloped out 1 an extra quarter and pulled up in splendid ■ condition. Reigh Counts fractions were : :24%, :49%, 1:16, 1:42-5. 1:." 6V5 and 2:11%. The watches J registered Reigh Olgas work in the following: :2:.%, :ol, 1:17, 1 :43Vs, 1:57% and 2:12%. The best speed test of the morning was i recorded when George Barnes Derby eligible, Whiskarm, with Kederis up, worked a half-mile : in :47. running the first quarter in :23. The colt started from the three-eighths post I and displayed a high order of speed throughout. " He seemed possessed of the speed that characterized his noted sire, Whiskaway. , Bert Williams gave Blackwood and Dowagiac their best workouts of the year when he sent the pair together three-quarters J in the good time of 1:14%. They went along at an even pace in close alignment, running the quarter in :23% and half in :4S%. W. G. Yanke gave both Bar None and 1 Longridge "openers" for speedy trials tomorrow. Bar None ran three-eighths in :35 j and pulh-iJ up at the half in :48%. Longridge . galloped three-eighths in :36% and j 1 -was eased up at the half in :." 1%. Colonel 1 Shaw ran a quarter in :24%, beginning from 1 . Continued on twentieth pace. , [ I • : I • • i t I t , 1 , - F - , - , • - t NOTABLE WORKOUTS Continued from first page. the barrier. Sea Rip and Anita Peabody went out together and galloped three-quar- ters in 1:17%. The Futurity winner is in splendid condition and ready to race. Rolled Stocking and Flat Iron, candidates for the Clark Handicap, both worked a mile and it was a coincidence that they went the distance in similar time — 1:42%. They are both fit and ready. Trainer Michell of the Mrs. J. D. Hertz stable uncovered a speedy filly in Sandal- phan, a daughter of Sand Mole and Cotton Blossom, which went out with two other youngsters and running away from them ran a quarter in :22%, three-eighths in :35 and half in :48%. The filly is eligible to the Debutante Stakes. Training operations at Douglas Park also showed much activity. D. F. Kelly and Two Dans, the J. J. Coughlin pair of Derby eligibles, went out for a mile trial and D. F. Kelly, showing the way throughout, negotiated the distance easily in 1 :45V5. Jake Lowenstein gave Rurik a useful work. The gray colt appeared to good advantage when he ran three-quarters in 1 :17. Trainer Danny Miller has shipped fifteen of the J. J. Coughlin horses to Aurora in charge of trainer Dick Hefferan. The consignment in-; eluded Dan Burnham, Fannie May, Ethel Sherlock, Cecelia Grob, Hallside Guy and a band of two-year-olds. Dr. C" N. Finch, veterinary specialist, this morning performed an operation for wind trouble on Subcommittee, three-year-old colt by Negofol — Moonglow, a member of the J. J. Coughlin stable. Louis F. Marshall, who a few years ago raced Courtship, Marie Miller and Prince K., in partnership with his brother G. A. Mar- shall, arrived this morning. He spent the greater part of the winter in Honolulu.
