FASHION STAKES WINNER « Orissa Makes New Track Record in Feature at Belmont Park. * Gallops Four and a H.ilf Furlongs Over WHllH Course in :5I — Valkyr Surprises in Handicap. NKW YORK. W. Y., June 4— Orissa, the two-year-old daughter of Purchase and Durbar, that races for the Raneocas Stable, hung out a new Widcner course record for the four an I a half furlongs at Belmont Park, wlu-n she was winner of the Fashion Stakes in :5t. It was the feature of the afternoon, with a value of ,475 to the winner and. at the end, Orissa was only winner by the shortest margin over Adm. Gary T. Graysons Spree, wi.h George D. Wideners Atlantis rather a distant third. Conditions were anything but favorable for racing, with a cold drizzling rain falling most of the afternoon. The crowd was a big one, and the absence of wind made the .fast time possible. There were eleven fillies which went to the post in the Fashion Stakes, Estelle Marie being an added starter from the stable of Davis Ledorer. Some time was lost at the barrier, for which Stupendous was largely to blame and. while the field was there, for some reason or other, George W. Wideners Atlantis was moved from her natural fourth position at the post to the outside. Orissa. starting from the inside, was away in full stride and dominated most of the running, though at one stage Atlantis had her slightly headed, and Spree was right after the pair of them. It was not until the last eighth that Atlantis began to tire and, from there to the finish, Orissa and Spree went on to fight it out vigorously to the last stride. Bpcee was going better than the Sinclair filly, but Fator, by a particularly vigorous ride, kept the daughter of Purchase going to earn the decision. In fact, the finish was so close that many in the grandstand thought the placing judges had erred in not awarding the verdict to Spree. This battle took the two fillies out three lengths before the tired Atlantis, and she, in turn, was four lengths before Stupendous. It was a good finish that came out of the mile for platers, that was the opening number, when J. N. Levins Effie was just up to beat home E. Arlingtons Friedjof Nansen, while P. Martins King Jimmy finished third, beating Temeraire. Friedjof Nansen was the one to force the pace throughout, and he successfully stood off Manehu. Fire Watch and Harass. Effie, in the meantime, was not far away, and Goodwin bided his time to the stretch. Then, through the final eighth, the filly finished With a rush that saw her winner by a head in the last few strides. King Jimmy also finished fast, to be well lapped on the first two. G. A. Gochrans Valkyr was a surprise winner of the Richmond Handicap, for three-year-olds, at one mile and a sixteenth. Ridden by Kelsay, Valkyr dominated the running throughout and, at the end, had a wide margin over A. H. Cosdens Vito, while Knapsack, from the Salubria Stable, was third. Four others completed the field. From a good start. Kelsay went immediately to the front with Valkyr and opened up a safe margin before taking his mount under restraint. Back of her raced Vito and Bystander, lapped on each other, with the latter along the rail, while Knapsack was next to last, leading Algernon. There was no change in the running positions until the far turn was reached, and it was there that Knapsack and Fair Ball moved up at the same time. Fair Ball was through, however, before the next eighth was covered, while Knapsack was gaining steadily. Swinging for home. Valkyr lengthened her stride and. without apparent urging, drew away from her opponents, to score by a four-length margin. Vito, when put under a drive, raced Bystander into defeat and, at the end, had a safe margin over Knapsack, which, in turn, defeated the tiring Bystander for the short end of the purse. » _
