FINAL DAY AT THORNCLIFFE * Chapman Colors in Front in Kings Birthday Handicap. » . Xealon Kay Vindicates Confident Barking in Toronto Feature — Tetra Glass Scores In Second Race. • TORONTO. Ont., June 4.— Nealon Kay, the four-year-old gelding which races for Mrs. B. E. Chapman, was winner of the Kings Birthday Handicap, feature of the final day of the meeting at Thorncliffe, when he defeated the Seagram Stables Beau of the West by a neck in a furious drive which lasted from the head of the stretch to the finish. J. C. Fletchers Perlapides was third another half length away and then came Taurus. The Kings Birthday Handicap was the feature race of the holiday program provided for the closing day of what many considered the most successful meeting ever held at the Lea side course. There were eight starters. The Seagram Stable sent a pair to the post in Beau of the West and Duchess, while the J. C. Fletcher colors were carried by Perlapides and Hanna Deebe. Nealon Kay was the favorite and well backed. The field was at the post but one minute when starter Cassidy sent them away to a splendid start. Taurus, quickest to begin, showed the way around the first turn, but on the back stretch Hanna Deebe went to the front and drew away into a lead of four lengths. Nealon Kay was third. On the far turn, Whitaker shook Nealon Kay up and he went to the outside with a burst of speed that carried him to the front in less than a sixteenth of a mile. Once in command, the gelding was taken under restraint and he had a bit in reserve when Beau of the West made his bid at the head of the stretch. At the eighth post the pair raced on almost even terms. Nealon Kay had his neck in front despite the determined effort of the Seagram horse. Neither Nealon Kay nor Beau of the West were able to gain an inch. In the last sixteenth, another factor loomed up in Perlapides, which finished in resolute fashion. Gaining on the leaders at every stride, he was only beaten half a length for second place. Six lengths back followed the tiring Taurus and then came Meeran. The latter had a rough race. He began well but in the run around the first turn Nealon Kay crossed over in front of him and Burn3 pulled him up. He was again blocked on the back stretch and at the finish appeared to be sulking. An additional attraction was the Newcastle Purse, at one mile. Clearance and Rockady were the ones that found the most support and the Thorncliffe Stables filly scored in handsome fashion, winning by a length and a half from the imported racer Quick Return. Rockady, about as speedy a filly as is racing up here this summer, raced into a four lengths lead in the first quarter. McGinnis was sitting still on her in the back stretch. Silver Song was in second place, but. despite her riders effort, she was never able to reach the leader. In the stretch Quick Return made his effort, but in the last sixteenth he tired. Clearance, messed about by J. Walker, defeated Silver Song by a head for the third place.
