j , PROBABLE AMERICAN DERBY FIELD ♦ ■ Twelve Starters May Contest in Chicagos Outstanding Race —Misstep the Favorite— Rurik the Dark Horse— Strolling Player Coming From East s The American Derby, to be run at Arlington Park Saturday, will be contested for by a field of a dozen, according to present indications, and a majority of these horses will be racing in the colors of western owners, although two eastern stables and a Canadian establishment may be represented. Smith •v is a pronounced favorite, especially in view of the fact that he is meeting many of the horses he defeated in the two previous Derbys. Rurik, which has just come to hand, will be meeting Derby horses for the first time, if the Chicago Stable starts him over the mile and a quarter route, and, in Sview of the absence of previous form, he is considered a dark horse. Track officials have been advised from the East that the Salubria Stable will ship Strolling Player here, the English colt having shown winning form Tuesday at Belmont Fark. If Strolling Player starts, he and E. B. McLeans Toro will form the eastern entry. With the main division of the Seagram Stable now entrenched here, it is probable Solace and Eugene S. will carry the colors of the Canadian stable. Phil Reutera Galahad is feared because of his fine race in the Fairmount Derby, after being almost left at the post. In company with Capt. George Foster, he will arrive from the Collinsville track tomorrow. Other probable starters are Jack Higgins, Lawley. Reigh Olga, Sea Rip, Typhoon, Irish Pal, and Blackwood. 10. Ambrose will come here from Latonia to ride Toro and J. F. Schorr is expected to saddle the colt. W. Garner will be here to ride. Misstep. The majority of riders for the other starters are already here. With twelve horses starting, the American Derby will have a gross value of 1,700, of which the winners net share will be 2,150. The second horse will receive ,000, the third ,000 and the fourth ,000. The fifth horse will save his entrance and starting fees.
