— • ENGLISH TURF N0TES~ — £ $ — LONDON, England. The six events at Manchester, run June 1, worth 0,000 in stake money, attracted only twenty-seven starters. The fine weather was chiefly to blame, many owners deciding not to risk their horses on the firm going. Twenty-seven runners was a poor days total for Manchester, and the Castle Irwell executive may have to consider the advisability of instituting a system of spraying the track, on the same principle as at Sandown Park, where pipes are laid high up under the rails. Easter Hero and Shah III. left St. Giles May 31 en route to France. Easter Hero will take his chance in the Grand Steeplechase de Paris at Auteuil on the 17th of this month. Following an attack of double pneumonia, the death took place the morning of May 29 at his home at Kingston of A. C. E. Howe-son, well known as an owner of race horses. He had been ill since the beginning of the year. One of his best horses was the successful hurdle and flat-racer Zeno. Among the hurle races won by Zeno were the Imperial Cup at Sandown Park, the Jubilee Hur- die at Manchester, and the General Peace Open Hurdle at Lingtield. The late Charles E. Wylam, who died on May 4 at his home on the East Cliff, Bournemouth, was well known in racing circles, but he was, perhaps, better known for hi3 great charity work during the war. As a racehorse owner, he met with many successes, winning the Newbury Spring Cup and the Victoria Cup in 1913, the Royal Stakes at Epsom, 1914, and many other races. From 1913 to 192G, his horses were trained by J. Rhodes. But during the war he took very little interest in racing ; his chief interest was cheering the "boys" who were wounded. Counterfoils discovered since his death show that he spent £10,692 sending things to the front and in hospital gifts at home.
