, . i TWENTY-THREE IN DERBY . » Misstep Among Eligibles for ,500 Added Raceland Derby. » Independence Bay Handicap Attracts Thirty- Two — Thirty Named for Ashland Handicap. « . RACELAND, Ky., June 19— The four stakes to be decided at the Raceland summer meeting of sixteen daya, beginning July 4 and ending July 21, filled exceptionally welL The Independence Day Handicap, which is to be the feature opening day, has thirty-two nominations. The Ashland Handicap, to be run on Saturday, July 7, has thirty eligibles. The Raceland Derby, to be decided on Saturday, July 14, has twenty-three nominations, and the Irontonia Stakes, for two-year-olds, which will be the feature of the closing day of the meeting, has fifty-five eligibles. The Le Mar Stock Farms Misstep, the rapid-running son of LTpset — St. Theresa, victorious in the Fairmount Derby and second to Reigh Count in the Kentucky Derby and to Toro in the American Derby, heads the list of Race-land Derby eligibles. Misstep has created quite an impression on racing critics by virtue of his game endeavors since the "Derby season" opened in the West, and he will certainly be an overwhelming choice for the Raceland Derby. The Audley Farm has nominated Easter Stockings, winner of the Kentucky Oaks. Tiie Sir Barton — Irish Lassie filly, trained by K. Spence, has won six of her last seven starts, being second to her stablemate, Bobashela, in the race which she lost. She has taken into camp some of the best three-year-old colts and fillies racing in the West this year and will be a formidable contender for top honors in the Derby, provided Spence decides to make a try for the race. Hiram, Senator J. N. Camdens Peter Quince colt, which gave promise earlier in the year of developing into a high class three-year-old, is the only Camden nomination, while Mike Dondas, son of "Bill," has named Mickey D., an outstanding two-year-old in the West last year. Promotion has more than a chance, according to Jack Baker, who trains the R. S. Clark representative. She recently won at Churchill Downs and in so doing defeated War Feathers, the 0,500 filly, among others. Harry Payne Whitney, eastern millionaire horseman, heads the list of nominators with four horses, including Sesqui, Royal Pennant, John Peel and Pollywog. Other three-year-olds named for the race include Bonivan, winner of the Camden Handicap at Lexington this spring ; Old Fellow, Elizabeth, Lord Marmion, Colonel Shaw and Chum. Although fields in the Raceland Derby since its first running have not been as large as those in other three-year-old races throughout the country, the class of the starters has been far above the average. The first running, in -1924, saw Bob Tail, the E. R. Bradley representative, victorious. In his wake came Altawood and Black Gold, winner of the Kentucky, Louisiana, Ohio State and Chicago Derbys. Deeming, C. B. Dailey 3 brilliant Kentucky Oaks winner, was triumphant in 1325, defeating Old Slip and Tall Grass. Malcolm B. Jr. defeated Carlaris, Coffroth Handicap winner, and Drone in the second renewal in 192G, while Sewcll Combs Mary Jane defeated Yeddo and a crack field, including Laurel Hall and Handy Mandy last year. Mary Jane had previously won the Ashland and Kentucky Oaks and was rated as one of the best fillies of 1927. The Derby was formerly run for a purse of ,000 added, but was raised last year to ,500. The record for the race is 2:04%, held by Bob Tail. In its four renewals, colts and fillies have divided the honors.
