LARGE CROWD AT AURORA SPECTACULAR FINISH Big Sweep Gets Up in Final Strides of Feature Race Gold Mint and Taddywawa Forco ForcoLewis Lewis and Kemp Colorbearer ColorbearerOut Out to Limit to Win AURORA 111 May 4 Big Sweep carry ¬ ing Lewis and Kemps colors made an auspicious debut this year when he was win ¬ ner of the Inaugural Purse which served as the feature of Auroras opening day pro ¬ gram He won in a close finish with Gold Mint and Taddywawa after the trio had engaged in a spirited duel in the final eighth that left the result in doubt until the final strides where Big Sweep succeeded in secur ¬ ing a slight advantage and managed to re ¬ tain it to the end endThere There were nine starters in the race which was over five and a half furlongs and the start found Old Kickapoo a wellbacked starter left at the post with Roy Gibson ana Bowler the entry of P Reuter also away so poorly that they might just as well have been left standing with Old Kickapoo Run ¬ away Princess Gold Mint Taddywawa and Big Sweep were away well and they raced closely grouped to the stretch where Big Sweep was forced back and had to race wide thereafter He came steadily and joined the leaders again an eighth out and hung on gamely to ultimately score his victory victoryAUSPICIOUS AUSPICIOUS IXATJGURAL IXATJGURALNever Never in the history of Aurora racing has there been such an auspicious opening than that which marked the inauguration of the Illinois racing season under the auspices of the Exposition Park Jockey Club ClubLong Long before the bugle called the horses to the post in the opener every available inch in the grandstand had been taken The 12 000 programs that were regarded as more than sufficient to accommodate the expected visitors proved entirely inadequate for they were exhausted quickly The Aurora man ¬ agement simply was not prepared for the big throng and many of the visitors were un ¬ able to gain admission to the grounds for the first race on account of inability to secure tickets at the numerous booths at the differ ¬ ent entrances The crowd included many notable personages in the political financial mercantile and sporting spheres spheresThe The mild weather was a contributing fac ¬ tor in the extensive outpouring of turf en ¬ thusiasts If the highly successful Aurora opening can be regarded as a barometer of Chicagoans interest in the sport then the other and more pretentious courses scheduled to hold meetings later are in for the greatest years they have ever experienced experiencedNo No outward incidents marred the occasion The routine fashion in which the sport was conducted led one to imagine that the activi ¬ ties were simply a continuation of the pre ¬ vious day instead of resumption of the sport in a new year yearZSO ZSO DISSE SIOX APPARENT APPARENTThere There were no surface indications of the dissension that had existed between hors men and track management that delayed the opening for three days Both sides were eager to forget and be satisfied with the ad ¬ justment justmentThe The betting activities almost reached a total equaling the best day at the course The players however were sadly astray in their judgment for favorites failed in most in ¬ stances but there were no pronounced up sets and winners found ample support that held their price down The fast track con ¬ tributed to enjoyable sport finishes in most instances being of the close variety and caus ¬ ing much enthusiasm enthusiasmGeneral General manager Clifford R Trimble was highly elated with the success attending the opening The crowd at the course said he was a record for an opening day at Aurora and has only been exceeded by tho attendance Decoration Day The volume o speculation was also surprisingly voluminous and totalled much more than on any previous opening day dayMr Mr Trimble also anonunced during the af ¬ ternoon that conforming to previous cus ¬ toms Monday and Friday will be ladies day when the ladies will be privileged to witness racing as guests of the Exposition Park Jockey Club ClubThe The introductory race which brought a dozen to the post resulted in victory for J H Limbirds Go Away which won in Continued on twentieth Iace LARGE CROWD AT AURORA Continued from first page handy style having led the others well in hand all during the final quarter Naa Breeks another outsider finished in second place slightly in advance of Knockabout FO lightly regarded that he was grouped with others in the field The disappointments in the race were The Squire and Meknes The pair had confident support The Squire ran well during most of the distance but Meknes broke down after threeeighths His rider De Prema jumping from his back backRed Red Spider carrying H C Rummages colors was winner of the second race after a fast sprint in the last sixteenth that car ¬ ried him past Sandy Hatch The latter was probably best but his rider raced him wide and rode weakly in fact a bit overconfi dently in the last sixteenth Golden Sight which at one stage of the race was in last place closed an immense gap to finish third beating Emphatic by a short distance for that portion of the purse Emphatic dom ¬ inated the race in the early stages but Sandy Hatch was always in close pursuit with Supporter also prominent Sandy Hatch took the lead a sixteenth out but succumbed in the last twenty yards to the winner rush rushThe The third race also over threequarters brought out a slightly better grade of racers than had started in the two preceding races A dozen started and it again witnessed the downfall of the favorite when Black Flyer failed to get a part of the purse Mat Hunter was the winner over Catch Him with Sturdy Stella in third place The leading trio hav ¬ ing the race between them after Black Flyer had tired Pomegranate ridden by D Lynch was a sufferer from interference soon after the start which caused his rider to be un ¬ seated He was not injured
