DERBY PROSPECTUS Elimination of Roguish Eye and Return to Racing Form of Ervast Tijuana Speed Marvel En Route to Downs After Sensational Trial TwentySix of Most Prob ¬ able Starters on Saturday May 18 The week just gone by has been an eventful one in respect to the Kentucky Derby which is now only two weeks off The practical elimination of Roguish Eye one of the half dozen or so that were held in the highest regard was coun ¬ terbalanced by the restoration of Ervast to the list of probable contenders It was thought for some time that Ervast was out of it but he seems to have returned to his best form at Tijuana so far as training is concerned and when he recently worked a mile in the astounding time of 136 and a mile and a quarter in 205 there was a quick change of plans and Ervast was started on his way to Kentucky The news of the surprising trial caused his odds in the future books to take a big drop but perhaps not before the advices were received privately by some who had time to get down before the odds fell back to the original 12 and 15 to 1 1There There were other lesser events affecting the advance speculation on the big race chief of which were the victory of Voltear in the Chesapeake Stakes and the defeat of the im ¬ ported Twink in his first start of the year in a race won impressively by one of the rank outsiders among the eligibles Minotaur Twinks failure will not be held against him to a great extent since he had up 128 pounds and was conceding a tremendous lot of weight but the manner of Minotaurs victory establishes him as an almost certain starter and one which will be accorded much more respect than has been given him in the past pastOthers Others have recently improved their chances to start These include The Nut Battleship Gray and Essare Battleship Gray a son of Man o War graduated at Havre de Grace and later won another race at the same track in which two or three Derby eligibles went The Nut one of those sold by H P Whitney to the Warm Stable followed up a recent victory by finishing third to Voltear when the latter won the Chesa ¬ peake He made a most impressive finish finishVoltears Voltears victory was considered a genuine triumph for candidates that have raced through the winter He came up from Ti ¬ juana apparently as fit as when he left the major tracks last fall He did not win a race at Tijuana but was second in the Tijuana Derby and was a keen factor in the running of the Coffroth Handicap The most prominent Derby eligibles that finished be ¬ hind him in the Chesapeake were The Nut Leucite Dr Freeland Minotaur and My Sis the latter a winner of three races in Mary ¬ land during the spring including the Har ford Handicap Continued on seventeenth page
