SENSATIONAL DERBY TRIAL Ervast Reported to Have Worked One Mile in l3635 Gallops Derby Distance of One Mile and n Quarter in 203 Colt Apparently Sound as n Dell TIJUANA Mexico May 4 Baron Longs sensational Paicines Blind Beauty speed marvel Ervast has suddenly loomed upon the horizon as an outstanding threat in the blue ribbon event of the American turf the Kentucky Derby A 100 to 1 shot doubtful starter in the future books throughout the country a couple of weeks ago a thrilling preshipment final workout here over the full Derby distance in time that literally burned up the track has placed the Cali ¬ fornia bred youngster in the front ranks as a potential winner of the coveted prize prizeThe The workout was the last for the gelding before being shipped to Kentucky and he had the railbirds gasping as he galloped one mile in 136 the mile and an eighth in 149 and finished the mile and a quarter Derby distance pulled up in 205 Frac ¬ tional time for the work was as follows 11 23 35 47 59 111 136 and 149 Three watches held by Walter Fenwick trainer for Baron Long and two other discerning horsemen stopped on Ervast with only onefifth of a second difference Fenwicks watch showed just 1 50 50A A A Baronis horses Bill Seth and the fast sprinter Crofton worked with Ervast Bill Seth was elected to work for the first threequarters and Crofton was to pick up the Derby hope at the fiveeighths post anJ continue on with him to the wire wireAfter After a preliminary warmup the three horses took their positions Ervast had joc ¬ key F Douglas up whose weight with a heavy saddle was anounced at 106 pounds poundsBill Bill Seth and Ervast began on even terms approaching the eighth post but it was soon evident that Bill Seth was no match for the crack California youngster Ervast with frictionless strides drew away from the Ba roni plater despite the fact jockey Douglas had a tight hold on him After passing the fiveeighths post Crofton joined Ervast and carried the latter along at a fast clip When the wire was reached Crofton was pulled up by his rider but Ervast went on the full Derby distance and was eased up in 205 205Ervast Ervast will carry the jade and green colors of Baron Long in the Kentucky Derby It will be the first time that these silks have ever appeared on a race course outside of Califor ¬ nia Ervast made his racing debut at Tan foran last fall In his first start he rac2d green and fell a victim to the speed of the more seasoned New York colt Infinity which subsequently at Tijuana he easily vanquished giving him five pounds in weight Ervust then went on to win eight consecutive races breaking and equaling track records at five eighths and one mile mileThree Three days before his engagement in the Tijuana Derby Ervast developed a swelling in his front ankle Heroic treatment night and day was resorted to in an attempt to correct the ailment which veterinarians claimed was the result of an insect bite Ervast went postward but he was only a shadow of him ¬ self and finished out of the money moneyWith With the Tijuana Derby a mattter of his ¬ tory Ervast was put out of training He responded splendidly to treatment and is now as sound as a bell and has regained that terrific speed that spelled defeat for so many of his foes
