B P WHITNEY DOUBLE Bargello and Beacon Hill Carry Popular Silks to Victory Each Qualify Handsomely for Preakness Stakes and Ken ¬ tucky Derby NEW YORK N T May 4 Two of the H P Whitney eligibles for both the Preak ness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby made good adequately at Jamaica this afternoon when Beacon Hill led home some of the other eligibles for the classics in a sprint handicap and Bargello galloped off with the Kings County Handicap at one mile and a six ¬ teenth These were the two outstanding races of Saturdays program and Workman shared in the double when he rode both to victory The Kings County had a net value of 7250 to the winner winnerThere There was a break in the weather and while it was still uncomfortably cool there was abundant sunshine and after the track had dried out nicely it was fast A big holi ¬ day crowd graced the occasion occasionAfter After Son o Battle had been withdrawn from the Kings County Handicap there were eight left to perform and besides the winner Mei Foo which had carried off the Pau monok Handicap is also an eligible for the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby while Upset Lad is eligible for both big races racesBargello Bargello had a slight weight advantage over these but his score was so impressive as to suggest he did not need the weight con ¬ cession Incidentally the running just about eliminated Mei Foo from any serious con ¬ sideration among the best threeyearolds threeyearoldsThe The start was a good one and Byrd also raced out to show the way Workman had Bargello in second place and under a mild restraint while Mei Foo was going in third place and also under restraint TI others followed along with Double Pay in fourth place placeIn In the run down the back stretch Fator permitted Mei Foo to move into secnod place and it appeared that he could go by Byrd at the first asking Bargello was still in third place and at the heels of the Rancocas colt and two lengths before Double Pay Pay3IEI 3IEI FOO DROPS BACK BACKBut But Byrd still had plenty left and when Mei Foo did not go to him Fator shook the son of KaiSang up sharply and then went to the whip but it was of no avail then as Workman called on Bargello and the colt responded and was soon alongside Byrd while Mei Foo continued to drop back and there was some closing up back of him himThrough Through the final eighth Bargello put Byrd away to come home the winner by four lengths but Mrs Vanderbilts horse stuck to his task to save second place by a neck from T M Cassidys Mi Vida which was closing with a rush and back of him little Upset Lad led the others othersH H P Whitneys Beacon Hill an eligible for both the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby was an easy winner of the California Handicap which attracted J L Johnstons Chatford Sun Shadow from the Arden Farms Stable and W R Coes Igloo Each of these is a Preakness Stakes eligible while all ex ¬ cept Igloo are also eligible for the Kentucky Derby It was the first appearance of the year for Sun Shadow a brother to Sun Ed ¬ win and he had been working so well that he was looked upon as a well nigh certain winner winnerThe The start was a good one and Igloo and Chatford at once set out to make pace with Sun Shadow racing third and Beacon Hill well back of the three but galloping smoothly McAtee shook up Sun Shadow going to the turn out of the back stretch and for an instant the son of Sun Briar moved up but when he tired McAtee drew his whip and roused him sharply As he felt the sting of the whip Sun Shadow appeared to sulk and he would not extend himself thereafter thereafterIn In the meantime Workman was moving up steadily with Beacon Hill and as the others went a bit wide on the turn for home he came through with little trouble to be home the winner by half a dozen lengths Chatford easily saved second place and Sun Shadow after losing much ground in the stretch just nosed out Igloo for third thirdThe The ease with which Beacon Hill was win ¬ ner determined that he will be sent to Pimlico to start in the Preakness Stakes May 10 He was a maiden up to this race
