ALTITUDE WINS OAKS High Cloud Filly Best in Pimlico Stake Race Aquastella Finishes Second and andMarch March Hare Third My SJs SJsAmong Among the Unplaced PIMLICO Md May 4 The Pimlico Oaks one of the annual fixtures of the spring meetings of the Maryland Jockey Club and the first of these events for threeyearold fillies run this spring was the feature at this famous old racing grounds this after ¬ noon The Audley Farm furnished the win ¬ ner in Altitude a filly by High Cloud Torque Coming from behind and taking the lead on the far turn Altitude won in easy fashion at the end by two lengths and a half from Mrs F Ambrose Clarks Aquastella The Wheatley Stables March Hare was third beaten half a length for second place and Willis Sharpe Kilmers Mint Friary wig fourth There were eleven starters the Keeneland Studs Sweet Genevieve being withdrawn withdrawnThis This was Altitudes second start this spring In her previous effort at Havre tie Grace she was beaten threequarters of a length by Minotaur and taking a line on this race Altitude attracted much support and went to the post a well backed favorite Am ¬ brose alert at the post rushed My Sis to the front when the start came and was quickly joined by the Hitt pair Eterne and Irish Morn This trio raced heads apart entering the back stretch Altitude was in fifth place on the inside Going to the half mile post Fields went to the outside and moved up fast He was on even terms with My Sis as they turned out of the back stretch and carrying the latter along at a rapid pace shook her off making the turn for home homeAt At the eighth post Johnny Maiben sent March Hare up with a rush and joined the latter Fields had something in reserve however and when released from restraint Altitude again drew away and at the finish was increasing her advantage Mint Friary after following far back for threefourths finished very fast Irish Morn and My Sis tired in the stretch and were beaten off Tlia net value of the Oaks to the winner was 54760 TREMENDOUS GATHERING GATHERINGIt It was a tremendous gathering that turned out at Pimlico this afternoon and the crowd was the largest that witnessed a days pro ¬ gram in Maryland this spring The Maryland Jockey Club provided an excellent program with two stakes the Green Spring Valley Steeplechase over the twomile course and the Pimlico Oaks as features Purses of 5000 were added to both of these races racesA A close finish came with the running of the Green Spring Valley Steeplechase when Ed ¬ ward R Bradleys Beelzebub defeated John Macombers Redbridge by a nose A length and a half back followed the Dorwood Stable entry Rubigny and Eider heads apart It was a spectacular contest and the finish aroused much enthusiasm A field of eleven went to the post and all but Nomad finished the course Marshall Fields horse went down at the sixth jump jumpBeelzebub Beelzebub showed a good performance The first turn of the field he carried Mollie Eliza ¬ beth along at a rapid pace and then took command to draw away into an easy lead At the tenth jump Beelzebub made a bad landing and all but unseated Mergler who clung to the horses neck and scrambled back into the saddle Beelzebub recovered quickly and retained the lead leadIn In the final eighth the pacemakers bunched up Redbridge had been following along with the rear division but responded with a great burst of speed when Jeffcott called on him and at the end wa gaining on the winner at every stride He just failed to make it but in another stride past the winning mark he was in front It looked like a case of Red bridges rider waiting too long before making his run There were thirteen jumps and the winners portion of the stake was 4740
