FAIR PLAYS SUCCESS IN THE STUD . e 9 WONDERFUL CAREER One of Americas Greatest Pro- r genitors of High Class Horses. 1 E I Comprehensive and Exhaustive c Review of His Progeny and Their Records on the Turf. j; E 1 r Editors Note Herewith Is the seventh of a series of articles covering the entire 6tud career of Fair Play, one of the most famous and successful of American sires, which died last year. The subject matter is presented in an entirely new and novel manner, which, we feel certain, will jj prove interesting reading not only to q those who find lecen enjoyment in en- j dcavorlng to fathom the manifold inys- q tcries of the fascinating industry of j breeding, but to the general racing public E as well. q The crop of 1922 was a poor lot. Six of the colts were unsexed, but one of the fillies I has foaled and, in the entire racing of the I fifteen only three stakes were accounted for. Some of this band gave promise as two- or three-year-olds, but through death or other r misfortune failed to mature into other than j platers. Swope, without doubt, was the best. Although Swope contested ten fixtures as y a juvenile, he succeeded in but one. This was I the Great American Stakes, in which he won j over Single Foot, Noah and thirteen others. He finished second to Young Martin in the j Tremont Stakes ; third to Sunny Man and n a Reminder in the United States Hotel Stakes; r second to Master Charlie in the Remsen Han- -dicap and unplaced in the others. As a three-year-old he made twenty starts but failed to win but one purse race at Saratoga. He competed in sixteen of the most popular stakes and was placed in eight of them.. - Reveillon, Volante, Hilary and Play Hour, all geldings, are still racing and have been 4 good performers in their class. Reveillon is 4 probably the best of the four at present. He has won six races each year for the past three. Felix won the Flash Stakes in his initial start from a very ordinary band and faded out. A small race in 192G and another in 1927 and he disappeared, from racing. a Brightness was sent over the jumps and won two races in 192G, one of them being 1 the Beverwyck Steeplechase at Saratoga. She c .was in training as late as 1928. Chatterer won one race at two and one at three and was retired at the end of 192G. Equable was raced but one year. In 1927 : she foaled the bay filly Royal Equity, to -imported Royal Canopy. This filly made twelve starts last year but failed to score. Auld Lang Syne won one race on the flat " and one over the jumps. He died in 192G. Le Roi made five starts and was well thought of, but died in his two-year-old year. In 1927 Blue-fly produced a colt, Bumptious, to Audacious, which has not been started. No reports of foals from Deuce, Prudentia or Rollicking have been made. The crop of 1923 Fair Plays produced two J notable horses in Display and Chance Play. These two are true evidence that Fair Play could have gained fame without the assistance of the daughters of Rock Sand, though it is not likely he could have sired an equal to Man o War. Three of this crop have been put to study duty, viz. : Display, Chance Play and Fair Wind, and Festival and Claptrap are eligibles. The fillies have not been in stud long enough to prove their worth. Few horses, if any, have competed in more stake races than Display. In ninety-nine starts he has earned a place on seventy-four occasions and, along with them, second place on the list of money-winning horses of America, his total earnings amounting to 5G,37G. His last appearance was at Miami, February 27, when he was paraded before the grand stand before being sent to Lexington to stand at Mereworth Stud. By displaying his sires disposition in bad behavior at the post, causing poor starts ; refusals to run ; interference and, in some cases, just poor racing luck, he has been squeezed out of many victories by small margins. His stake contests, being too numerous to comment upon, are listed below, showing date, : track, stake, finish, weight, distance, time and winner of race. In races where he finished second or third the finish shows the distance he was beaten by and, in his winning races, the second horse is shown in the winner column. These are only the stakes in which Display earned a place. Chance Play was considered one of the best handicap horses of his day. As a two-year-old he won three races, including the Youthful Stakes; was second in the Junior Champion to Mars, to which horse he conceded eight and one-half pounds ; third in the Futurity and Hopeful Stakes. At three years he made ten starts, winning four races and second in three. That year he won the Potomac Handicap ; second in the Dwyer Stakes, one and one-half miles, beaten a neck by Crusader ; second to Crusader in the Maryland Handicap. At four Chance Play started twelve times, winning six races. This was his greatest year. He won the Toboggan Handicap ; Saratoga Cup ; Havre de Grace Cup, beating Edith Cavell and Crusader ; Lincoln Fields Handicap, setting a new track record of 2 :0iYs at Lincoln Fields for one and one-quarter miles ; Jockey Club Cup; Merchants and Citizens Handicap. He was second in the Brooklyn Handicap to Peanuts ; second to Cloudland in ! the Gadsden D. Bryan Memorial Handicap . and second to Light Carbine in the Queens County Handicap. At five he won three handicaps. Chance Play is the property of Arden 1 Farms and stands at Greenwich Stud at a 1 fee of ,500. Festival has been raced five years and, although he has not won any stakes, he has ! 1 met and defeated some good horses. He won three races as a two-year-old and gave good promise, but failed to develop the speed that was expected of him. Claptrap is a brother to Catalan, but far from the same class of racer. He won two 9 r E I c j; E r jj q j q j E q I I : FOALS OF 1922 The following are the Fair Play foals of 1922 and their complete records: Family Male " Amt. Horse. Dam. Number. Sire of dam.
