PERFORMANCES OF ROSEBEN Weight Carrying Feats of One Oneof of Americas Fastest and JL Greatest Sprinters There have been some recent discussions on high weights successfully carried in this country and they have centered about Rose ben the remarkable sprinter that raced so brilliantly for the late Davy Johnson It is nearly twentyfive years since Roseben per ¬ formed but he will always be remembered though it is surprising how many have for ¬ gotten just what he carried in his sprinting performances Some who have followed rac ¬ ing more or less closely tell of his carrying 165 pounds poundsJust Just to set it all straight give Roseben his full due and reproduce a bit of interesting turf history the Roseben performances un ¬ der high weight have been dug out of the chart books and here they are On Oct 6 1905 tho son of Ben Strome and Rose Leaf then a fouryearold won the Manhattan Handicap under 147 pounds That was a threequarters dash and was run in 111 Under a like weight he re ¬ peated in the same race the following year racing it in 112 Then at Aqueduct on Nov 5 1906 he also carried 147 pounds to victory over threequarters in 112 His third victory under that weight came at Brighton Beach on July 17 1907 and it was another threequarters dash won in 112 At Aqueduct on Nov 16 1906 Roseben raced seveneighths carrying 146 to win in 127 127Every Every time this remarkable sprinter was asked to shoulder a greater weight than 147 pounds he was beaten At Jamaica on Oct 31 1906 and carrying 148 pounds he was beaten by Oxford and Jacobite in a race run in 113 through muddy going goingOn j On Sept 19 1906 over the short three quarters at Gravesend the star sprinter un ¬ der 150 pounds was beaten by Comedienne which carried 109 pounds Then at Brighton Beach on July 25 1907 when sent to the post under 150 pounds to race threequarters I he was beaten by Ben Ban BanRoseben Roseben will always be remembered as one of the greatest of American sprinters and his time of 122 for seven furlongs with 122 pountftj still stands as the American record for the distance That record was established at Belmont Park Oct 16 1906
