CHURCHILL DOWNS READY Additional Improvements Enhance EnhanceBeauty Beauty and Accommodations Stewards Stand Moved Public Addres System and Approximate Odds Board Installed LOUISVILLE Ky May 10 Although Churchill Downs in the past has been as commodious as any track in this country en ¬ gineers found it possible to add several improvements that will add to the seating capacity as well as greatly benefit the large crowd that is expected to visit the his ¬ toric course for the fiftysixth running of the Kentucky Derby May 17 17One One of the most important changes to be made was the moving of the stewards stand from the front side of the track to the cen ¬ ter field Heretofore their pagoda was abovo the stand used by the placing judges and located in the club house The top story of the stand was removed leaving a glass inclosed structure for the judges and also affording the patrons an excellent view of the finish A new stand was erected for the stewards opposite the finish line in the infield with a top story for the use of tho official timer timerA A presentation pagoda for the Earl of Derby was built near the lane where the horses come from the paddock Here tho owner of the Derby winner will receive tho handsome gold trophy and the compliments of the Churchill Downs management from the lips of the man for whose family the rich fixture was named namedThe The public address system which has proven such a benefit to the racing fans on many of the foremost tracks of the coun try is being installed and will be ready for opening day It will be the first time in the history of Kentucky racing that the ad ¬ dress system has been used and should proyo a distinct success successAn An approximate odds board as well as a new mutuel boaid was completed several weeks ago Heretofore the public was forced to go back of the stands to get the line on their choices this will remedy the unneces ¬ sary milling about in the large crowd crowdELIMINATE ELIMINATE CROWDING CROWDINGSeveral Several new entrances and exits are com ¬ pleted that will eliminate the crowding to and from the gates which in the past has proven such a decided disadvantage disadvantageWhile While the public was taken care of in tho many new chances the real life of the raco track was not overlooked Col Matt Winn after looking over the blue prints of the new program saw that the boys back yonder as he referred to them were being over ¬ looked He meant the exercise boys the grooms and those that go to make up the vast army responsible for the horses being in a fit condition at post time timeIt It has always been hard for these attaches to see a Derby but he meant it to be easy for them So when the engineers received their blue prints after his close examination they found an addition additionIt It was a stand capable of seating a thou ¬ sand persons running from the five furlongs to almost the threequarters pole It was constructed on the outside of the fence high enough so all seated comfortably could wit ¬ ness a race from end to end endTwo Two new twentyfourstall barns were built near the fiveeighths pole and modernly con ¬ structed A majority of the space is re ¬ served for the eastern Derby candidates while due to the demand for stabling room several stalls were allotted to late arrivals arrivalsTwentyfive Twentyfive additional boxes were built in the club house and a waiting list of 600 is ready to grab up any available cancellation True to tradition there will be the customary price for Derby Day and purchasers ot tickets will have an opportunity of getting seats in the new stands built last year in tho club house and stand First come first served is the motto for those seats and that is the reason the gatemen go to work on Derby Day at G a m
