CHURCHILLS OPENING Gala Scene at Inauguration of Louisville Meeting Stars and Bars Wins Clark Handi ¬ cap Derby Candidates on View in Trial Race LOUISVILLE Ky May 10 Brilliant sport a tremendous crowd and but for a drizzle ol rain ideal weather marked the opening ol the fiftysixth annual spring meeting al Churchill Downs this afternoon The shower having no effect upon the track developed only a short time before the seasons finesl field of handicap stars visited the post for the fiftysixth running of the Clark Handi ¬ cap which featured and there was little trace of it as Stars and Bars which Edward Haughton saddled for Mrs Payne Whitneys Greentree Stable raced home as an easy winner of the coveted fixture fixtureLast Last in the field of ten swinging around the first turn the victorious son of Pennant and Remembrance went on to win well in hand by two and a half lengths over the Audley Farm Stables Easter Stockings Pigeon Hole the starter of H P Headley finished the one mile and a sixteenth in third place and Clyde Van Dusen led Martie Flynn Dlackwood The Nut Montanaro Nos taw and Jock in finishing fourth The latter six raced to the close of the route in the order named namedIMPOSING IMPOSING JIECORD JIECORDIt It was a victory that netted 10900 and added no little luster to the imposing record of the winner successful in eight of his four ¬ teen starts this year Second award amounted to 20JO while 1000 went to third and Clyde Van Dusen saved entrance and start ¬ ing fees amounting to 250 250The The result added to a number of sur ¬ prises for the large and representative throng as Clyde Van Dusen and Jock came in for most regard with but scattering sup ¬ port for the sturdy winner winnerThe The biggest upset of the day and one of the biggest in spring racing came in the result of the South Louisville Purse when High Foot equal favorite with Gallant Fox for the Kentucky Derby was unplaced The race was won by Pansy Walker wjth Prince Atheling second and Gallant Knight another prominent Derby candidate was third Pansy Walker owned by the Three Ds Stock Farm Stable was making her first start of the year The distance was six and a half fur longs longsHigh High Foots defeat following the day after Gallant Fox impressive victory in the Preakness Stakes appears to clinch Derby favoritism for the Belair Stud representa ¬ tive which is listed as a certain starter in riderBlack the Derby with Earl Sande as his rider Black Comet C C Van Meters unbeaten son of Westy Hogan and Comet ODay gained additional prestige when he gamely outfinished Bill Morris from the Knebel kamp Morris stable by a nose for first honors in the fourth race the West Point Purse PurseBILL BILL MORRIS FAILS FAILSBill Bill Morris which had the call in the betting succeeded in heading the winner shortly after reaching the stretch but gave way in the final strides and Black Comet passed him right at the end Six lengths back Chub took third by a short margin from Busy Monarch and Gunfire the latter tiring after following in closest pursuit of the victor and Bill Morris to the final eighth Frank Chiavetta had the mount on the win ¬ ner which ran the distance in 54 fc under an impost of 109 pounds which forced Bill Morris to concede him nine pounds Buddy poundsBuddy Basil a Latonia Derby winner signaled his return to competition after an absence of more than eight months in regis ¬ tering a smartly gained yet unexpected vic ¬ tory in the opening race This was at six furlongs and the winner making his first start in the colors of the Valley Lake Stable found his company of eleven from among the top grade platers Running from far back with a rush through the closing quarter the winner ridden by apprentice R Deperini headed Hot Shot in the final fifty yards and pulled away to win by a half length Three lengths back Clog Dance which went promi ¬ nently for the entire trip saved third over Herrick HerrickJohn John F Schorr saddled a Pardner Beauty Belle slowly gave way to the winner after reaching the final eighth and Bagiel closing with fine speed only failed at reach ins the McLean filly by a head But for adverse luck during the early stages where she failed to obtain ample racing room Bagiel a daughter of Peter Quince from the stable of J N Camden probably would have rewarded the confidence of her supporters who installed her favorite favoriteRegal Regal Lady which found no little favor had every opportunity in getting away and held a good position on the turn but failed to respond when called on in the closinr quarter quarterThe The wellseasoned The Southerner which races for Mrs F P Letellier furnished an ¬ other mild surprise when he defeated Chariot Make Hast and four others that included the well backed Duelist and Sandy Shore in the third race Sandy Shore offered a flattering gesture in racing in the lead for almost three quarters while the moody Duelist after suffering mild interference on the first turn sulked and was never a factor When ready after reaching the final threeeighths the winner raced to the front with a rush and energetically ridden drew away into a long lead as Chariot succeeded in outstaying the tiring Make Haste
