GREY COAT SURPRISES Furnishes Upset by Scoring in Pimlico Spring Handicap Final Days Racing at Hilltop Track Witnessed by Excep ¬ tionally Large Crowd BALTIMORE Md May 10 Grey Coat which had not won a race since his mem ¬ orable victory over the champion Blue Lark ¬ spur last June came back with another surprise victory in the running of the Pim ¬ lico Spring Handicap He carried the Sam ¬ uel Ross silks to victory over W E Cas key Jrs William T and Mrs K E Hitta Hot Toddy to add another 7280 to his earnings The victory was an easy one but one of the real surprises of the aft ¬ ernoon in the light of what the son of Gnome had been showing in previous races racesIt It was the closing day pf one of the most successful meetings ever enjoyed by the Maryland Jockey Club and with ideal weather there was an immense crowd out for the occasion one that approached tho big attendance of Preakness Day DayThere There was little delay at the barrier in the Pimlico Spring Handicap and the start was a good one with Hot Toddy first to show from the stalls and Grey Coat showing the way to Dinah Did Upset but before the back stretch was reached he was last of the seven that raced As the field made the first turn Dinah Did Upset and Black Diamond closely lapped were showing the way and then came Solace Hot Toddy Boba shela and William T in fairly close order and Grey Coat was at the heels of William T TGREY GREY COAT MOVES TIP TIPRobertson Robertson had William T in rather close quarters in the run down the back stretch but he found his way through until he was close after Dinah Diu Upset and the Salmon colt which continued to set the pace Solace was beginning to drop back but as he did Bobashela was working his way up and Grey Coat was gradually improving his position It was going to the first turn that Robert ¬ son made his first serious move with William T but he was forced to go to the outside of the leaders and when they bore out slightly it had cost him much ground In the mean ¬ time Grey Coat had moved up until Stevens was able to take advantage of the opening inside He called on the son of Gnome and coming through in the final furlong was the winner by three lengths William T saved second place by a length and Hot Toddy outfinished the others to save third from Dinah Did Upset William T had probably lost the race when he was forced to go wide in the stretch just as it was won by Grey Coat when he saved ground at the same time timeThe The steeplechase race of the final day run as the first offering was the Consolation Handicap over the two and a quarter miles course and for nonwinners at the meeting It resulted in rather an easy victory for Malvoisine from the Eastland Farms Stable well ridden by H Sims Walter J Salmons Word of Honor raced to second place with Moholi bearing the silks of the Flying Horse Farm Stable beating Augustus F Goodwins Ferular for third Nine went to the post and of the lot Le Digard a stablemate to the winner unseated W Collins at the second jumped while a stirrup leather broke on Knockalong Tom after he had taken the first jump and he was pulled up by Murphy Fortunately Collins was unhurt by his fall and walked from the field fieldTAKES TAKES COMMAND COMMANDFrom From a good start Sims lost little time in sending Malvoisine into command and the French juniper was good enough to gallop along in front of such company and never left the result in serious doubt He jumped boldly and had ample left to be winner by three lengths lengthsSims Sims never permitted Malvoisine to draw away from the others though it would easily have been possible and in that fashion he at all times had plenty in reserve to meet any challenge challengeIn In the short run through the front field the winner saved ground and easily galloped to his victory while Word of Honor had more left than the others to save second place from Moholi by three and a half lengths lengthsR R A Johnsons Laurie although tiring badly at the end of the one mile and seventy yards in the third race hung on gamely un ¬ der a hard ride by Marinelli and won by threequarters of a length from Realtor with Jane Rinehart in third place After the field had been straightened out for the final drive Laurie rushed up from second place and passing Jane Rinehart took a lead of two lengths This stood him in good stead at the end for Realtor always close to the leaders finished fast and gamely and cut ¬ ting down the Johnson colorbearers margin slowly and steadily forced Marinelli to do his best to save the day dayTen Ten went to the post with Laurie holding1 the post of favorite When the start came Jane Rinehart was first to show and set the pace to the final turn with Laurie sec ¬ ond and Realtor third The others were never factors After making the final turn Jane Rinehart gave way and was passed by Laurie and Realtor then hung on long enough to outstay Catlettsburg for third place placeAll All Hail a Golden Broom colt running for Mrs W M Jeffords won the Fair Gain Purse which was the second event of the day and behind her were two firsttime starters Soil Gills and Colono the former racing for the Seagram stable and the latter carrying the colors of A H Morris The favorite Gay Pal was fourth closely crowd ¬ ing Colono which finished three lengths be ¬ hind Soil Gills All Hail although best had to do his best to beat out Soil Gills which although he was one of the field betting group raced like a comer and closed with fine courage Gay Pal bore out after getting up into a commanding position but finished well
