MR. GAIETY BIG SURPRISE • Shows Unexpected Finishing Power in the Leaside Handicap. « Good Trogram at Thorncliffe Park Draws Big Crowd Despite Unpleasant Weather —Table Talk Wins. * TORONTO. Ont., May 16.— The management of Thorncliffe Park offered its patrons an excellent program at the Leaside course today, and despite unpleasant weather conditions, a large crowd turned out to witness the sport. There were several feature races, most important of which was the Leaside Handicap, run as the fourth race. This -was a dash of one mile and a sixteenth, to which the club added a purse of ,500. The conditions called for three-year-olds and over, foaled in Canada, and it brought a field of seven to the post. They were a well-matched lot. Kingsway, on the strength of his victory on the opening day, was made the favorite, but the best he could do was to finish third. Mrs. E. Glassco furnished the winner in Mr. Gaiety, the aged son of For Fair, which beat the Thorncliffe Stables Refiner by two lengths and a half. Mr. Gaietys victory was a surprise. He lacked speed in the early stages of todays race, and was far back on the back stretch. Wilson took him to the outside, and in the run to the far turn he moved up in resolute fashion. On the turn for home he took the lead, and for the remainder of the journey held command. Aymond and Kingsway were the ones to make the pace, and they ran one-two for six furlongs. As they turned for home they began to tire, and in the stretch Refiner caught and passed Kingsway to beat him by four lengths for second place. Aymond was a tiring third, beaten off another four lengths. The field was well strung out at the finish. *_
