FALL APPLE WINS EASILY 4 Carries Colors of C. V. Whitney to Triumph in Keene Memorial. « Universe Second and Irish Bob Third — Curate First in Sansovino Handicap. ♦ NEW YORK, N. Y., May 16.— Fall Apple, a well balanced son of Pennant— Eden, which races for C. V. Whitney, accounted for the nineteenth running of the Keene Memorial, which was the outstanding feature of the Saturday program at Belmont Park. Fall Apple had a good margin over Dr. T. M. Cassidys Universe at the finish, while the latter was driving hard to withstand the determined final furlong challenge of James Gaffneys Irenes Bob. The winner was ridden by Robertson, and added ,075 to the Whitney coffers. The first Saturday of the spring meeting at Belmont Park brought out a crowd of record-breaking proportions. Ideal weather prevailed, and the track had dried out rapidly from the mud of the previous day. A strong wind blew across the course, and this hampered the efforts of the juveniles which raced through the Widener course. There was some delay at the post in the Keene Memorial, which Leonine, one of the Rancocas Stable starters was responsible for. He was on his bad behavior, and starter Cassidy ordered him placed on the extreme outside. Universe was in number seven post position and acted quietly, although he was handled by an assistant. Following some delay the barrier was released and the field left in good alignment. Fall Apple settled into his stride quickly, and in a few yards was on even terms with the leaders. Robertson then took him in hand and dropped him back of the pacemakers, using them as a wind shield. In the meantime Universe, Brandon Mint and Don Red were racing along heads apart, with Irenes Bob on the inside showing the way to Fall Apple. These positions were maintained to the junction, where the main track crosses the Widener course, and there Brandon Mint and Don Red began to show the effects of racing with the fast pace against the stiff wind. Kelsay called upon Universe, and the ; Cassidy colt responded in a courageous manner. However, Fall Apple was fully settled in his stride, and was closing strong on the I outside. A furlong from the finish he had assumed command, thereafter draw away, winning with speed in reserve. Universe responded in the final, took a few yards to I Kelsays bid, and in a hurricane finish for • the place outlasted Irenes Bob. The latter was a long way in front of Don Red, which 1 was again steered to the inner rail, and I came again. The winner was saddled by Jack Healey , in the absence of Hopkins. Sixteen two-year-old filiies started in the first race of the day, which was for maidens, ■ and C. V. Whitneys Pintail proved a clever winner over R. A. Fairbairns Sarietta, while i Foxiana, which races for J. E. Widener, was ; third. The field was fractious at the post t and when the break came Kadana broke, but quickly swerved into the inner rail, unseating 1 P. Keiser. The latter escaped with 1 i shaking up. "Pete" Bostwick signalized his return to steeplechasing over the Metropolitan courses I by piloting Thomas Hitchcocks Chenango , to an easy victory in the Adjidaumo, which was over the two-mile course. The event was for four-year-olds and over under conditions, non-winners of thiee races last year or this. Chenango showed the way to Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks Madiola, while Kenzie. from the Brookmeade Stable, was third. Degas, which raced with Valorous II. as an I entry, finished fourth. Two mishaps happened in the race, Omar Romar losing his 3 rider at third fence, and Valorous II. falling [ at sixth. Curate, which is the main reliance of f Joseph E. Widener for the handicaps this 3 season, accounted for the Sansovino Handicap, - which was a dash of a mile, for three-year-olds and over. Ridden by Mack Garner, - he was a driving winner over Knowl-ton, - from the Ramapo Stable, while the e Glen Riddle Farms Great Gun was third. 1. The race was Curates first of the season, i, and at the end he was doing his best to 3 withstand the fast finishing Knowlton. The e latter raced well in the early stages, but t when Garner called upon Curate and increased - his advantage, Renick was content t to rate his mount along behind until the e stretch run to wear down the Widener r starter. The move was a failure, for Garner •- got Curate home winner by a length. i. -
